For the Kimberley and many gravel roads of Australia, gas is fine. On the Gunbarrel and Canning this year, (4000k of corrugations) we noticed that the gas shocks tended to get hotter and many failed. I've talked to ARB and hey tell me their gas shocks won't get as hot as some due to low pressure gas. Foam is superior in such situations. So is straight oil. I opted this time for Koni double acting oil with no gas after 3 of my gas shocks failed on the Canning this year.

Read a review a while ago that said that once foam shocks overheat you throw them away whereas gas and oil recover somewhat and can continue to be used.
Doubtless someone will either confirm or deny the above

Confirm that. Foams dont recover, whereas gas will.
