Hi Folks

We are halfway through our 12 month lap round the block and currently on the NSW / QLD border and heading north. We have a 6 year old and 2 year old in tow and are aiming to be in Cairns during April to head across the top May to July. So we have Feb and March somehwere between Brisbane and Cairns. Coming from Perth we have found the humidity around Byron Bay hinterland pretty full-on and are wondering where would be best, in terms of avoiding the extreme heat, as we head north. Is inland cooler than the coast and does anyone have any recommendatios for top spots along the way? We seem to thrive on nature, peace and quiet, shade and a good water hole. We don't do so well in crowds and the touristy bits.

Thanks all - Mizuko.

And a PS - following on from our last post when the bearings failed near to Pardoo roadhouse in north WA in Aug 08. It all worked out in the end - a four week repair job on insurance. Perth Caravan Centre were fantastic (Murray is the boss - highly recommended) and they have done a superb job fixing up our Windsor Rapid.

Inland much much hotter than the coast, now the wet season is on it usually clouds over from the build-ups each day and can cool of a bit when the rain begins . I'm in the Top End of the Territory and It's just ideal,

Mizuko. North Qld is just starting its Wet Season. I would expect it to be wet this year and maybee a couple of Cyclones. You can get heavy rain right up the coast from Brisbane this time of year right through to April. The further North you go the higher the Humidity and the hotter it is. The coast is cooler but it is also where it floods the most. Try not to get caught in low lying areas. Most of the spots where you like to stay "We seem to thrive on nature, peace and quiet, shade and a good water hole". Are the places to avoid in the wet season. So watch the weather closly and try to have a great time. Cheers Tony

Inland is hotter but coast is more humid.
I'd go for the coast though - if you get right on the coast you are usually guaranteed good breezes to keep things cool.
I'd suggest spening 6 weeks on the eastern beach at Fraser!! (As long as the march flies are ok)

Can't comment on QLD in the summer but the cautions above sound good to me - people get swept away in the wet up there from time to time - we did QLD in the winter of 07 - coast and inland - excellent - the only downer being the insect attacks along the coast - they can be a real trial - re attractions, for us the linear playground along the esplanade at Townsville was excellent (looks out onto Magnetic Island) - you might not get the kids away from there - water gyms, artificial beach - you name it. The aquarium in downtown Townsville was good too (seeing we couldn't get out to the reef) - and they have plenty of clownfish. We enjoyed Cooktown overall too - believe the croc warnings you will see everywhere near water ...... they do not exaggerate ! We came home to SA through the centre - fossil hunting etc - we loved it, but the heat levels will be too high I guess for you before April. Have a good 'un !

Well at present we are parked in a nice van park (Silver Shores) on Pumicestone passage at Bribie Island. We intend to stay till Feb and head south after the school holidays.
It hasn't been to hot or humid here Its a nice 34 outside at 4pm and hottest day has been about 38.
Humidity has been Ok for here and gets worse the further north you go.
We are not to far from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast and good fishing and boating at the back door.
Would be a good choice for a layover for a while as it gets pretty wet up north starting about now as you see on the news.

Rates are reasonable. About $185 a week I think at the moment for 2 ???? Dont quote me however.

Park is very tidy, clean, quiet and friendly and mostly older permanents .

Hi Mizuko

The suggestions are all good, also think about Rainbow Beach
Caravan Parks and even Hervey Bay area, I would look at some park
where you can get a Southeast or Northerly Breeze near the coast,
good luck with what ever you do.

P S. the weather Bureau is predicting Cyclones late January early
February.

Cheers

Hi Mizuko,
An alternative might be to explore some of the national parks along the tablelands - Girraween NP, Sundown etc and north to Bunya Mtns. At least with some elevation it will be a bit cooler and not so humid.

Cheers,

Val.

I thought the closer you get to the sun the hotter it gets.

Head South for the next few months.

Cairns, even in April, you can expect 30-32 degress and bloody humid.

Having lived up that way for eight years it is only pleasant (without aircon) from May to October.

Cheers,

Jim.

Gee Mizuko,

As a Gold Coast local, the humidity so far this summer is yet to really hit. If you feel it now, it's only going to get worse especially as you head north.
Aim for anywhere you can escape to for a swim be it pool, ocean, creek or waterhole.
I have a camper and start the set up, go take a plunge, and come back soaking to finish the job.

Do you have aircon in your van? It may be your best investment if you don't.

cheers.

Hi Mizuko,

I would head to the coastline near Bundaberg. The most temperate climate in Queensland and as far north as you can go in summer and still swim all year round.
Even Agnes Water now has the irikandji jellyfish in summer.

There are lots of quiet places in this region where you will have campsites all to yourself.

We spent the Christmas/New Year period camped right on the waters edge at the mouth of one of the local rivers in a national park and had the entire camping area to ourselves. Not one other camp from 26/12 through to 30/12 and then another small group arrived and camped about 500 metres away.

In the camping (non-powered) section of a caravan park at the mouth of the Burnett River with views of the water, there is currently only one other camp set up. It was a little busy over xmas but the crowds have gone now and you will be sure to find a quiet shady site to set up.

Good luck with your plans.
