Has anyone had problems recording the Dakar to a DVD recorder from SBS, I tried yesterday and got a message on the screen about "You cannot record copy protected Movie" so I tried other SBS programs and got the same, Mine is coming via Satallite, just wondering if the same occurs to normal TV reception , SBS is free to air, I don't think they should be allowed to do that.

Good old analog video tapes works for me.

Does your DVD recorder restrict other channels or only SBS?

It can't be the recorder, I was recording Top Gear a few weeks ago, now it seems they have put this restriction on, all other channels can be recorded .

No problems direct to recorder from both satellite and f.t.a. Never heard of such problem before.

If your DVD Recorder is using HDMI cable. it is possible you are being blocked by the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

This is typically used by DVD producers to prevent copyright of their discs, but have not heard of it for TV. although I guess it is possible for the TV stations to encrypt the signal in this manner or a similar manner.

You may wish to try connecting your DVD player via a Component or other cable. If it works after this, most likely HDCP.

My point (Theory) being, that SBS may have the means to Copy Protect only certain programs. So if the problem only happens during a show or a few shows, its possible they are encrypting the signal at that time.
Sports events, in particually F1, WRC are very restricted by the original broadcaster in who can re-produce the content. As someone else in this post said, DRM, which is along the same lines, its all copy protection, which-ever form it is implemented.
I thought this might apply to Dakar.

Had the same problem with my HDMI cable.

Swapped to component, and now records the Dakar on both Satellite and Digital fine.

Has only happened to me on the Dakar and no other programs on SBS or on other TV stations.

Welcome to DRM. If content providers get there way all content will be like this.

Hello Doug
I recieved same message when trying to record a program once - but it was intermittent - i.e. one moment it would record next it wouldnt - I attributed it to poor signal quality (it was a Perth channel and Im 200K away). So when signal poor and disrupted message would appear and I couldnt copy. When good strong signal - no message and could copy.
Cheers

Doug I visited the SBS Rally site today and they have streeming video of the entire race minus all the ads etc. Just pick whether it's bikes, cars or trucks you want to see. Vids are about 3.5 - 4 min each. Good thing is that you get to see the show about 6hrs ealy.
