Having been across that road a few times Ican say that the road, like others in the area, vary in condition from year to year.Iwas across there in 2007 and the road was quite good but Iwould only take a
well built "offroad" van and even then you would have to go slowly.Depending where you are travelling from you might be better off goingthrough
Ravenshoe,
Georgetown,
Normanton. If you do go throgh the
Chillagoe route do not travel at night as there is a LOT of cattle on the road.

Damien
Sorry mate, but that road is far too rough for even an off road van in our opinion. In 2005 we saw an off road van shredded in every which way! just out of
Chillagoe and then closer to
Normanton, a camper trailer in similar state, so we would say NO VAN.
All the best

Yeah ditto,
Did it with a camper trailer but we were ok as we had it built to our specs with the manufacturer knowing that we were going to do that road and cross country thru the Cape from west to east.
Lots of bulldust holes and corrugations.
I wouldn't recommend it with a production camper or caravan. The road can be good at either end and lousy in the middle, but it's too late by then.
Cheers
Dave
