Hi All About to buy a new 4.2 TDI Patrol, Just wondering if someone can give me the run down on ABS & how it performs off- road & how much room it takes up under the bonnet & is it worth the money???
The ST-L model comes STD with it, and cant be deleted off the option list.

Cheers Steve

Gday Steve, I got the safety pack with my 4,2 a month ago, i was lucky got it for $800 and they threw in the electric brake unit for nothing, On the 4.2 it takes up a small amount of room at the back of the engine compartment on the passenger side, right up against the firewall, the 3.0L is in a bad spot, its the same size but from memory its further forward. The 4.2 ABS does not interfere with the second battery spot. I havnt tried it offroad yet but i locked it up at 100ks the other night on a wet , quiet road to check it out and it works a treat. It doesn't work under 10k's an hour so in slow offroad it wont work at all. I think for the amount of time most people spend onroad it might just save your backside one day and if its not great offroad that maybe it can be disabled for that mode of travel. I got it this time for that reason, trying to pull up 2.5 tonne on a slippery road isnt much fun, especially on A/t tyres, i had a few experiences with my last GU i dont really want to repeat, and i consider myself a very conservative driver. You also get the passenger airbag, better resale, if you can go the extra money, do it. Regards Michael

Steve, The standard ST model comes without ABS and the passenger air bag. What does the L denote? If you want the safety pack, its just another version of the ST with ABS and passenger air added, They bring them into the country with the extra bits on them. Regards MIchael

Steve , I used to have a Pajeero with ABS and it was a pain off road. Now got a GU with out it - and its great offroad, although otherwise I'd have to agree with Micheal. What'd you do before ABS was invented and can you live without it, passenger has to go a long way to hit their head. There's also the insurance factor if you hit something that you might have to pay for. I figured that 'cos I'm pretty serious about offroad I couold do without it and I hav'nt regretted it--YET!!!!
I reckon if you tow and your trailer has a little too much ball weight (easy to do) then it'll pay for itself pretty quick. Good luck with the dilemma.

Hi Andrew, thats the other reason i got ABS Andrew, I tow a trailer everywhere offroad, And drive 88ks each way to work and back daily, so spending a lot of time on the road, otherwise if it sat in the garage all week and only went bush on the weekends, maybe i would have gone without ABS. Michael I presume the L stands for luxury only released 2 weeks ago.

Comes with

ABS, Twin Air Bags (safety pack)

Duel Air Conditioning( Ti Style)

Electric Leather Seats (Perforated leather breathes better)

Colour coded flairs& bumpers Can,t quite see the extra $6,000 worth really, could spend it on other acc;s. Must be a new model coming looks like Nissan is making the most out of all the spares lying around Cheers Steve

Traded my 2000 model with abs on 2002 model no abs, found abs absolute nightmare in rain, towing and off road. stopping distances constantly varying as conditions change. some off road training schools disconnect the abs because they consider it dangerous in the above conditions.if i had known how to disconnect abs i would have kept the truck.

test drive extensively before you sign the contract.buy what satisfies you.

ABS brakes can be diconected by removing a relay under the bonnet. ABS does not work at all well on lose dirt surfaces. If you know how to brake correctly using the threshold braking method you can leave your relay intact as you will never activate your ABS system. Cheers RobCairns Offroad Training & Tours
