I'm new to the C/T game, upgrading from traditional tent camping. Explorer are about to build my new C/T and it has electric brakes. From what I gather, it's the right choice to make, in preference to mechanical overrider. Anyway, which is the best brake controller... the Tekonsha P3 or the Tekonsha Prodigy? I note they're cheaper on eBay than what they are available at the shops.

Mate
I had a Tekonsha Voyager, on the Navara, and when got the Patrol, I put in a Prodigy. Just basically the delux version.
They are great, and the control you have is incredible. Mind you, I only have them just ever so slightly on, no sense in the CT stopping the vehicle, but when on the few occasions I have needed an anchor, then the brake controller is brilliant.
Cheers
Bucky

My vote is for the Prodigy! Previously had the Voyager on the Patrol, but as it happened it was one of a dud batch that came out.
On what turned out to be good advice, went over to the Prodigy. Its a real 'set and forget' controller, self levelling etc.
I have run it on the Patrol towing about 2.5T (set on 'Boost 1") for about 4 years without the slightest prob. I also agree that if you need an anchor the Prodigy will do the job.
Have no experience with the P3, sorry.
Hope this helps
Mark

Thanks, everyone for the follow-up so far. I've gone out on a limb and have bought a Tekonsha P3 on eBay for $220 which is better than the $425 for a Tekonsha Prodigy fitted. Not that there's anything wrong with the Prodigy, nay far from it, but it's the cost of supply-and-fit. When it arrives, I'll have a reputable auto sparky fit it. When the C/T arrives late Feb/early Mar, I'll be able to
test it out and let you all know. Thanks again!

Electric brakes are superior in performance to override in every way except probably durability. The magnets can be prone to rattling loose and breaking wires if used on rough roads resulting in an expensive repair job.
The prodigy is the only controller I would recommend. $425? sounds like you are getting ripped of. I've seen them for around $130 off the shelf. Would take less than 1/2 a day to fit it yourself, or at least lay the wiring out yourself and save paying a sparky for 3 hours of simple labour.

Barnsey is right.
The prodigy can be found much cheaper.
They are relatively easy to install by oneself provided you understand your vehicles electrics.
However if you have bought one then so be it.
You will find that elec brakes work
well. Just keep an eye on the wires that come from the rear of the brake hubs on the CT as they are prone to stone damage.

Fitted my Prodigy 18 months ago and have done Oz from top to bottom and am really pleased with the performance and ease of use. Had a scrapping noise at Bamiga on the CT and found the small spring clip that positions the magnet during assembly had fallen off and the magnet centres were flogging out (a problem with corrigated roads) but the brakes still worked fine all the way back to Melb including the
CREB track.
Much better control on electrics than overides but the durability is not as good. But hey you get what you pay for.
Cheers Rod
