hey everyone just got back from the worst camping trip ever to double island point. We went in our 80 series cruiser and two other mates in there hiluxs one of witch was purchesed on friday and we left n the sat morning, cut a long story short the other hilux jacked up big wheels bleep the gear box so it only had 4th gear and 2 wheel drive, fare enough drove it in 4th, went to leave the beach at the 3rd cut in and just made it through the puddle then the other lux went through no problems, then our cruiser went through half way the motor shut down. my missus was driving and i wa taking the broken lux through then on the radio i get the call its stoped and wont start pull over and walk back wont wind over so tow it out try to tow start it nope. so tow it off over the barge and a $450 tow job for the two cars back to brissy. start investigating and pulled glow plugs out still wont wind stripped the motor down head off and full of water pull pistons out and has bent every rod. mind you only finished converting it from a petrol to diesel in november. so now our cheap weekend turned into an expensive one. word of wisdom to every one never forget that you have put a pod filter on as a temp wile getting intake piping made, and go up the beach. hope every one else had a great weekend.

Wow, I just got myself a headache reading that :-(
Perhaps if it was in english......

So, if I can make any sense of this, you have done some bodgy conversion, and then 'hydrauliced' the motor, is that right?
And stuffed the gearbox?

If that is the case, then yeah, that would bugger up your weekend.

Cheers
Glenn

well its not a bodgy conversion, all wiring looms gearbox bellhousing, dash, tanks, only thing was that the genuine air intake hose didn't fit the aftermarket turbo. so i put a pod filter on while trying to source the correct hose and forgot to change it before heading up the beach. and it was the hilux that that stripped out the gearbox. and the one that was purchesed the day before we left went up and back no problems.

I'm still trying to work out what actually happenned?

A lux crapped out?

And an 80 series ended up with bent rods?

A puddle?

The only trouble was, besides the dodgy plumbing on the 80 series
was they went through the third cutting, they didn't have the
Balls to go through the 1st or 2nd cuttings on to the beach lol lol,
then again he had his missus driving the 80 series through the
puddle, and thats all it is, just a puddle, the 3rd cutting is reserved
for girls only, just as well they didn't go further up the beach
other wise there would have been three salvage jobs.

you said it your self "reserved for girls" would be why the missus was driving and you sound like one of those old codgers who own a 4x4 tow a mobile speed bump up the hi-way and it never see's even the dirt on the side of the road. and further would like to see you make it out the 1st cutting in 2wd with only 4th gear.

Mate,

Sorry to hear about your troubles, the ultimate bummer.

I am interested in your petrol to diesel conversion, how you did it, cost, problems to overcome, etc. Is it manual or auto cruiser?

Happy for you to email me if you want.

Cheers
Evan

I know the 3rd cutting well.. but I didn't think the water was that deep to even get in through a pod filter?? Mind you I always take the 1st cutting as it is easier to drive through IMO.

Expensive lesson to not drive through water without a suitable air intake but spill the beans.... How fast was the missus driving through the water and what line did you take?

I know that the water is not as deep if you round it on the Northern side (on the right as you come back from the beach) but didn't think it got that much deeper if you went through the guts!

Jeeze, thats sure is a horrible trip. Really sorry to hear that, its an expensive lesson and not one I'd wish on anyone. Also sorry to see the thread got hijacked by the grammer nazis. This site is quite bad for it but unfortunately not much you can do about it except ignore them. Most people here are pretty foregiving most of the time and do offer good advice.
