I am thinking of getting the TeLstra Mobile Broadband on offer for $149 so that I can use my laptop when travelling. What I am worried about is whether the fact that I have a contract with a different carrier it will affect the use of the Telstra system. I don't want a contract but just a prepaid system when I go away.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Mike.

You can use what you like just like you may have two credit cards.
As long as you pay the bills

I presume you are buying a prepaid USB modem.
Ive got a casual data plan which is about the same cost.

Just be careful how much you buy in advance cos it only lasts 30 days in most cases.

I have telstra broadband but for $25 a year my old providor iinet let me use my old email address.
You will also still be able to check you other providors webmail so wont really have to change email addys either.

Make sense, I hope so

Be aware that the pre paid modem doesnt have an antennae point so if you have difficulties with signal strength it cant be improved.
I used one (on a plan, not prepaid, as it is my only internet connection) with an antenna attached last year when we were travelling and was able to get a weak signal (enough to send and receive emails) in places when my NextG phone (no antennae point) was useless!
The prepaid will work within many town limits though so it depends on what type of travelling you do. Just make sure it is withTelstra as it still has the best coverage ( not good in many places!).
Cheers Heather G

Good point on the antenna connection Heather. I was amazed I was able to get out of a camp spot deep in the Thompson Valley in Victoria a few weeks ago with our pre-paid modem. With an extension USB lead, you can put it up high to get better signals though, but it pleased me anyway.

Thanks to all for your information. It might be worth getting instead of looking for a Maccas and using there wi-fi.

Thanks again, Mike.
