Have been trying to ID this pool taken during our round Australia trip 61/62. I think it is on the east coast as it was in a sequence with slides of Taronga Park Zoo and the Harbour Bridge, I was Six years old and all I can remember is we had to climb over the turnstiles to get out. A couple of photos of our trip in my profile.
Thanks if anyone can help.

Yep it's Townsville
I used to swim there with the Australian swim team during winter. only I had goggles and a snorkle. Lorraine Crapp, Dawn Frazer,Murray Rose, Ilsa and John Konrads spring to mind. Called Tobruk baths. And they called me Hans Haas.

Thanks Pinko, that's what it is. I have just been reading about its history on the Qld Govt.. heritage website. I don't know if it is still there as I could not find any current images online and because the Strand has been re-developed, cant recall seeing it when I was there 2005.

Hmmm ...rough guess......

Photo taken from high vantage. Sea looks flat. Could be the pool at Kissing Point, Townsville? Was there in the 70's and its looks similar

Cheers

Hello Willem, I have been looking on Google Earth as well and cannot see it. There is something like a pool at the southern end of the Strand, but it is too far from the beach as in the old photo.
Is Kissing point at the northern end of the Strand ?, there is a rock pool/baths there.
Have to have a better look around the next time I am in Townsville.

It is called Tobruk Pool and is still there. I recognised it from the photo, although the line going out to see threw me at first.

The Council did a refurbishment of it a few years back. Can't remember exactly when.

It is down near the marina, close to the city end of the Strand. At the other end of the Strand is called the Rock Pool. Just below Kissing Point.

Tobrook pool alright. I used to swim there most mornings before work. The shore line has changed somewhat since the photo was taken.

Hello Bruce, you are right about the shore line, been some serious reclamation there, I read online that the council had to do that after a couple of cyclones in the 90's I think.
Thanks
