Hi all, I'm considering fitting a Rear View System for my caravan but am a bit confused regarding the camera. Do any of you know the difference between a CMOS camera and a CCD camera. There is a great deal of difference in the price and would like your opinion on which one to use???????

Hi Ray

Use CCD on the van to get the focus range. Use cmos on the car to get a compact camera.

The most important thing is to make sure that both camera's have Infra Red night vision. There are CCD car camera's but very few have IR.

Also check to make sure the camera is well made in metal and using glass lenses.

Finally for the DIY install make sure the cables are pre-fitted with waterproof plugs so you don't have to cut and solder and make sure the camera's are powered from the screen so you don't have to find a 12V source on the van.

DO NOT BUY WIRELESS SYSTEMS.

Don't use an IR camera if you intend to install it INSIDE the rear window glass.

I'm looking for a system too. Preferably with 7"screen at reasonable $$$$s and NON IR camera if anyone can make a recommendation.........

Cheers,
Peter

Contact me by email.

I still have a few of our first generation butterfly camera's cmos with no IR.

Same as I have on the back of my LC100.

This is really going to irritate you.... but I can't help myself.....

No need for the apostrophe's in cameras.

G'day Ray,
Don't know anything about CMOS or CCD cameras, but we recently installed cameras on the back of the cruiser and c/van which work really well, day (except when sun is shining on it ) and night. The one for the van also has microphone in it so if the Mrs is at the back she can actually talk to you(which is handy at times because until you get used to the system its a little difficult to judge distances) now don't need Mrs to help hook the treg fitting up as you just back straight on to it.
We got ours from a guy called Safety Dave in Melbourne, Phone 03 9527 6868, advertises in the Caravan and Motorhome.
It took me approx two hours to run the cables and have it up and running. Cost approx $460 all up with 7inch screen.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Baz
