firefox garble

i know it is abit of the subject but i am at wits end. when i download a surpose to be readable file it just comes up as a pile of numbers and dashes exceterer. i am using fire fox , do i have to set some thing up . please help

What type of file are you trying to download? TXT, PDF ??

right click on it and select "download file" or "transfer file" or "save file as" or something that sounds like that.
