Image Could Not Be FoundWe took off just at sun up to head to Big Red - knowing we'd have to go overland to get around the water which covers the road for many kilometres - lots of fun and fairly rough. Not so much rain has fallen out at the dunes - quite dry compared with around town. Plenty of fat cattle and lots and lots of newborn calves. Not much bird life yet - but at the bast of Big Red, hundreds and hundreds of green budgies eating the seed, plenty of hawks, harriers but no big eagles. Found one beautifully constructed big newish eagles nest - empty. Yesterday for the first time actually found a crows nest with a crow sitting.
Couldn't believe our eyes when we came to Big Red - the chicken run is bigger and higher than Big Red!

so then we had a look at the western side of Big Red - but it is not as spectacular - just needs some vehicles from east to west to push it down in a straight line (for a change) rather than the dog leg and it should be easy.......

We didn't go any further west - if we'd had another vehicle maybe - so we had a look at Little Red - oh dear, didn't take any photos of it - believe me, two large drop offs one below the other.
The prevailing winds this summer have been E/SE so the western sides are deep ridges. It doesn't appear as though there has been much rain in the SD - but the first people through will be able to advise on that - we are just making assumptions!
On the way back gave the dogs a swim -

Does anyone recognise this sign...

That's how we filled in about 5 hours this morning....nice change from floodwaters. Interestingly, no sandflies out at Big Red and surprisingly few flies. Hope you enjoy the photos. Ruth

Hi Ruth,
The photos look great. Any trip this season from the east will be a real try out. Fiona said "Bloody Hell" when I showed her the pictures.

Take care and regards to Ian

Best Regards

Stephen

Forgot to say that when we arrived on the plateau at Big Red it was easy to see no-one had been there for a long while - so I made Ian and the dogs stay in the car whilst I took photos of the pristine dunes and tiny tracks for ages before they were allowed to run amok. Took some lovely photos of tracks.
We have a keen photography group in Birdsville and are readying ourselves for our first Exhibition - hopefully in the new Gallery at the Information Centre in Birdsville. Something to look forward to.

Ruth

Great photos.

I imagine the first few cars from the west will need a few klicks on board when they hit the final crest.

Hi Ruth, thanks for sharing the pics, Big Red sure looks different without all the tracks, Somehow I don't remember seeing all that water around lol.

Thanks Ruth , what a contrast this country is , water all over the dessert and yesterday we were driving through heavy smoke and wind with burnt out properties all around after our hottest day is recorded history.
