In preparation for our June trip to the Kimberly's Can anyone please advise if we will have a difficult time finding enough unleaded refuelling places along the Gibb Rover Road, most of our reading seems to refer to diesel - we are wanting to spend a couple of weeks along the track and visit most places and would appreciate advice on the amount of additional unleaded we will need to carry to be safe especially from those with experience that have already been, and also any areas that are particularly difficult and distant to access fuel. Our vehicle is a Hilux and we will tow an off-road camper. Thank you in adviance JB

JB,

This link would be a good start. It does say where fuel is avaiable.

Hi JB

As far as i know, all the service centres have ULP as well as diesel, and this includes Drysdale River Station if you are going to the Mitchell Plateau and/or Kalumburu.

The distances aren't great along the GRR - but the time taken to travel and to see it all can be. Often we only travelled 100 kms in a day. We took three and a half weeks Derby to Kununurra, including Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu.

If you are looking for a good publication to help you plan, The Kimberley An Adventurer's Guide by Ron and Viv Moon has it all. I bought it from the ExplorOz Shop.

Last year we bought ULP at Drysdale, Barnett River and Imintji. The was also a pump (pretty sure) at the near the turn-off from GRR to Windjana Gorge.

Cheers,

Val.

Hi Val - I am not aware of any near the GRR Windjana turnoff, but we came onto the GRR from Windjana.

JB if you are going to Wyndham, diesel there is a lot cheaper than in Kununurra, so i expect the same would apply to ULP.

Motherhen, that might not be the case. Diesel is brought in by the ORD Co-op through Wyndham, but they don't distribute UL.

Just memory, but I thought Imitji only had Diesel. All the others (Barnett, Drysdale, Kalumburu), are OK for UL, but that is all there are.

Cheers,
Peter

We didn't call in at Imitji as it is only 70 something kms further to Mt Barnett; we stopped at Mt Barnett to refuel and pay for entry to Manning Gorge. I think Mt Barnett diesel was slightly dearer than Imitji from what others said.

Sorry folks, only bought ice cream at Imintji - deisel only? And the place on the Lennard River near the turn off to Windjana doesnt have fuel. Next time will consult diary rather than rely on faulty memory!
Cheers,
Val

Hi Val

I checked Ron Moon's book - 2006 edition. It says diesel only at Imintji at that time, and Peter and Duncan have confirmed it is still current. Not much further to Mt Barnett though. It is still not a big distance Derby to Mt Barnett for JB's Hilux.

In regards to Motherhens comment, yes Petrol is cheaper in Wyndham compared to Kununurra. And even though all Unleaded is trucked down from Darwin to Wyndham and Kununurra, Wyndham is still cheaper, although the truck passes through Kununurra first, as its closer to Darwin you would think they would be cheaper. But then again you would charge like a wounded bull too if you lived in Kununurra.

I last travelled the GRR late in 2006, there was no 'petrol' available on the GRR - only diesel.
As mentioned some places either end of the 700+ Klm long dirt road may have petrol.

Mt Barnett Roadhouse had ULP in May 08. So did Drysdale, but that's technically not the GRR.
