Walkers Crossing

Help please,
Planning to drive from Innaminka to Birdsville.
I have two maps of Walkers Crossing between Moomba gas fields & Birdsville Trk, one says "closed to traffic" the other does not???

Which is true????
Cheers Colin.

Hi Colin
This road when not closed by flood waters, is open to the public and is the quickest and easiest road between Birdsville and Innaminka.

Very interesting Drive

Cheers

Thanks mate. I did a forum search and came up blank. After I posted it the words Walkers Crossing were highlighted and confirmed what you are saying. How embarrassing,LOL
Cheers Colin.

Colin

Plan you drive well after mid year as the Cooper may come down in a larger flood this year and close Warburton Crossing.

The road between Innamincka and Birdsville via Walkers Crossing is a Public Access Route (PAR) in an agreement between the Pastoralists of the area and the SA Government. All tracks leading off that road into the Moomba Oil Field are closed to the public.

Thanks for the "heads up" re Warburton Crossing.

I will pick your brain further at the St George gathering if that's OK.
By then we will know exactly what the Cooper is doing, and it,s the week before we go out to Birdsville, as we are leaving from St George.
Cheers, Colin.

Willem/Colin - the Warburton Crossing is on the Diamantina and is already closed (according to the sat photo I received last Monday).
There is a possibiity, with the rains last week around Longreach, Blackall etc. that the Thompson & Barcoo will flood down into the Cooper (see Handy's Post last week) and may go further down - it would flood at Innamincka before the Walker's Crossing, unless there was rain in the area.

Errrrr..YES! Walkers Crossing not Warburton..plurry fat fingers again.

Walkers Crossing on Cooper Creek

Warburton Crossing on Warburton Creek an offshoot of the Diamantina River via Goyders Lagoon

Seems like my brains have already been picked....LOL

Colin - I read it again just before, when I got home from school and I was sure Willem did say it -
you know he has this clear fluid in a bottle with barbed wire around it - maybe he should have used it for brake fluid instead of putting it on his Weeties! LOL

We did it in 2006, nice drive..Closure is mainly due to rain, and flloods ect, as it is very low lying ground.

We have a Garmin Etrek Legend, and I saved the route, if you want it, I can email it to you !

Cheers Mate

By the way, the Cooper is expected to be 5.8m at Windorah on the 23rd Feb (next Monday) - so even if the water in the Diamantina goes down far enough here for us to drive out we won't be able to go past Windorah!
