Well, I'm back. The next time someone says NZ is fine in summer I won't believe em.
Two weeks of fun and frivolity and 4wding around the south island courtesy of a mate. Bloody Kiwis. They're all mountain goats! Up and down the mountains....at one stage we were 2000m up and stayed at a snow farm. Talk about alpine scenery ! We were higher than the long white clouds.
A great group of NZ farmers were on the tour, which made for some interesting radio messages.
I've selected some pix, and hope that you find them interesting.

Footy,
Didn't know that you had gone, welcome back.
The last photo, at least over there they tell you why they have closed the road. :-))

Yep. It's a big

No, that was Richard, the man who doesn't feel any cold. I do feel it...badly. I was wondering how long it would take to spot the odd man out. He also drove the lowest 4wd on the trip; but it wasn't he that ended up getting hung up on his towball. It was a newish Hilux...took the wrong line in a river bed and the result was red faces.

Sorry Footloose - I should have mentioned that we were on the public road up over
Hotham heights in excess of 1800m. I think they call it the Snowy Mtns Highway - or something like that! The one from
Omeo through to
Bright!

It's a ski resort in the winter. Also doubles as a test track for car companies . In the summer there's no snow...mostly...but it felt as though there was.
There was snow below us, where the sun doesn't get. Only patches of it but now I know why I'm a desert dweller :))

No. I didn't need a Kiwi speak book, except for the commentator on the trans alpine railway. I wondered what "fushing" was.
Apparently there are Kiwis, and then there are Kiwis.
They are a fine and hospitable mob, who cop a lot of flack from aussies that they really don't deserve.

G/Day Footy
Wondered where you were, was about to enquire did any one hear from you, but then I thought you will show up sooner or later,
glad to see you enjoyed your self, while every body on the
Gold Coast put up with the Humidity that we get this time of the year,
PS I don't mind the Kiwis, New Zealand is just another State of
Australia lol lol.

Hi Daza. Yes, I've been off like a raw prawn in the sun.
Those Kiwis aren't a bad mob at all. For just another state, it certainly takes a while to fly there.

That
young lady on the Trans Alpine had us all in fits of laughter last week when she was trying to explain how the Australian Possums were such a “pist” in New Zealand. I thought, well if they’re from
Australia, they must be.

Well as a South Islander who has lived in Wanaka it brings back memories.
However after sitting in Coffs Harbour for the last week in a very wet caravan park after 400mm of rain Im not really shook on Aussie summers either.
Its either go north and get drowned or go south and burn to death.
ROFL
Glad u enjoyed yourself in our lovely country.
March is actually the driest month for next time.
Cheers.

Hi Footy
Glad the trip went well. Recognise a lot of the country.
About half way through the Nevis Valley in behind the ruins of the Old Homestead later used as a Hotel there is a stone hut where we and the kids spent most of the summer hols, a bit of gold mining fishing, the kids loved rafting down the river, always warmer in the afternoon than in the morning.
Sometimes we would stay at the Nevis Crossing too.
Great country in the summer, a bit
cold in the winter, can freeze a bit harder there than in the desert. River and creeks can turn to
Ice at times, need 75% or more antifreeze in vehicles in the valley.
It has not been much of a summer in the South, lot of overcast changeable
weather.
Spent a few days at Moke Lake nice
spot in the hills behind
Queenstown and there was fresh snow on the tops a couple of mornings but gone in the afternoon, keeps the temperature down.
Pity timing did not allow our paths to cross somewhere when you were here in Gods Own Country, might have to catch up somewhere between or in a desert over there some winter
Cheers
Russ
