I rang the chap from Carrum Downs who had done some repairs on my Engel. Noise, seal and pushed feet back out. He kindly said he would check it over, no charge, to see waht the problem was.
Plugged it in at his place and it worked. At home after the hot day (Black Saturday) in the back of the ute under canopy, was still warm on 12 volt and didn't work at all on 240. Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe full cooling of motor, compressor.....??
Anyway he is keeping it for a couple of days and running it on both voltages to check it.
My powerpoint was operational and the 12 volt made a noise in the motor, just no cooling.

T,

Does it run OK at other times?

The reason I ask this is that in the back of the ute on that particular day the temp in the back of the ute (assuming it was closed) would have been at least 70 and probably closer to 80 degrees. No fridge will get cold in that heat.

Cheers,

Jim.

**No fridge will get cold in that heat. **

Wanna make a bet buddy,Last year i borrowed my brother in laws Holden 4x4 (had nothing else lol)...It was 42 degrees and i had my Evakool in the back tub under the tarp...The dial was on about 5.5 out of 10.The mistake i made was putting the eggs and the tomatoes up the element end..About 3 hours later they were that rock hard that we could have played cricket with them i was blown away ! There wasnt much circulation around it either because of the gear !

Cheers

Now listen here young fella, get it right :-)

Under a Tarp is nowhere near as hot as under a canopy. The glass in the canopy causes immenese heat, like inside a car.

Mind you, I reckon those Evakools would cope better than most, brilliant insulation.

I had a similar problem with my engel traveling down from Darwin during and extremely hot summer. Had it in the house on freeze in Darwin - by the time we got to Kunnunura things were defrosting. As the unit was just 12 months old I was a bit annoyed.

Turns out according to Engel they will only cool/freeze 45deg below ambient temperature. So to maintain -5 outside it would need to be only +40.

Spot on Bob,

I had a customer in the other day who had been lugging his Engel around in the back of a ute (with canopy) in the Northen Summer. Same thing happened to him.

I convinced him to do what I did and rip the backseat out of the ute and put it on the floor.

Cheers,

Jim from Best Off Road.

Heard from the repair man today. It's running at about -13 to -14 degrees on freezer with 240 v and about -7 degrees on 12 volt.
My faith in the Engel restored.

T,

That doesn't sound like it's OK to me.

My old 39L Engel would hold -18 on 12 or 240 in just about any weather.

Maybe a second opinion? Cool Factor in Braeside are pretty good 9587 5244.

Cheers,

Hi all,
If you have a canopy on the back of a ute/dualcab etc get a pressure vent put in the top near front and have it open.
It does 3 things, keeps fresh air going into the back and pressurizes the canopy so helps keep dust out and finally helps to keep the temp down when stopped.
It can be closed when the weather is damp.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Hi Dodger,
Where do you go for this type of fitting? The place I got the canopy?

T,
Yes you should be able to get it where you bought the canopy.
If not then try a caravan outlet.
It's called a scupper vent.

Twinkles,
good to read your problem is now fixed.
As I said in your original post the buck stops with the fridge repairer, looks like he found and fixed the problem :-))
