Howdy all, for some reason I seem to do most of the grocery shopping at home. SWMBO detests it, I love it, supermarkets are air-coned, great range of products and usually a young mum or two that catches this ol' pervs eye....hehehe.

As we are stocking up for a short trip in a couple of weeks time, I decided to do the major shop on the day a 'prominent retailer' was donating the days profit to the Victorian Fire Effort.
Good on them, I thought.

However, back at the shop last Tuesday, noticed average retail prices up a lot more than normal, over a wide range of goods, goods which havent been on special or reduced previously.

It just got me wondering if this was a business ploy to rake back that days profit, at the same time looking good in the publics eye.

Do you reckon Im getting too cynical in my later years ?

Cheers......Lionel.

Doing the shopping is my big day out. I always prolong the experience by sitting with a coffee before hand, so that I can sus out the lie of the land.
Did the shopping today and low and behold, the total was less than usual. No I didnt forget anything.
I'm not sure what this means....except there's more than one old perve out there :))

what? call yourself a bloke?

when i do the shopping i always get the same stuff because i know where it is. i plan the manouvre so i can get all my stuff in the least amount of time. i shop with a basket - if it cant fit in the basket youve wasted too much of your time in there.

------------------- Then i got a missus and have to smile nicely and say things like "thats ok ive got nothing better to do" while i push the trolley down every isle just in case WE see something WE need and then often back again just in case WE missed anything

Hardly cynical, Lionel.
The company's source of all their money is the 'average mug punter' like thee and me.
I noticed, just yesterday, a 30% ++ rise in the price of fruit and veg in the 'other' major retail food chain.
They'll probably blame it on the fires and floods in Vic. and Qld. but this is in metro Perth!
Apples at $8.49 a kilo??
Give it a rest, Eh?

I always do my shopping at the towns I am visiting as this puts a little money into the local community...

I'm with you mate. Support the blokes from the bush by buying stuff from them.

Works both ways too. We travel lighter and get to eat fresh local produce, the town we visit gets the dough and everyone is happy. Win win.

Seems the way to go to me.

Instead of boastng about "helping the farmer", as their advertising for today exclaims, why don't they just pay the farmer a proper price all year round, then they would not have to have a "profit free day" (snicker) today.

I think this "promotion" was to strike back at their major competitor, who did a similar thing last week and sent their profits to the bushfire appeal.

Yes, I am cynical ... and when it comes to the big supermarket/service station owners, I am ABSOLUTELY cynical.

Mate your not alone.
I was only thinking this the other day when I saw them advertising their generosity.
You or I donate to a charity it is 100% tax deductible? A receipt is required.
So the supermarket chains donate to the Red Cross, X amount of dollars is handed over, " Can I have a receipt for that donation please"
Receipt is handed over at tax time. It is deducted from the tax that is payed.
Therefore that is less money the Government receives in tax. In turn mean less money being being spent on Public works and Hospitals, roads infrastructure.
On the other hand the super market chain has advertised that they are helping. People believe they CARE and shop there, the wheel keeps turning.
