Like you my paj has hit just over 300,000k, had to get the motor rebuilt because of a cracked head. Looked into using a 3.2.
Mine is the older 96 NK with 2.8, but similar issues.

From what I found out on various forums, a few people have done it.

Issues and notes I found out, well the major ones.

The 3.2 block is basically the same as the 2.8, so engine mounts fit OK. Evidently the same bolt pattern on the bell housing and a similar gear box.

The 3.2 is double cammed, so you can't fit the intercooler over the engine. Move intercooler to the front and replumb. Mine is top mounted, not sure of the 2.8 in the NM.

The 3.2 uses a computer controlled version of the same 2.8 bosch rotary fuel pump, so you need to swap the wiring loom over from the 3.2.

Install an electronic throttle from the 3.2, due to to the item above. You loose the manual throttle control pull out.

Think there will be some other issues such as fuel lines and fuel filter location.

So it is not completely impossible. :o)

I would try the victorian pajero web site for more info.

Hope that helps.

G'day scott ,,
345000 km on ours and still going strong , from what i have been told , these are a very strong and reliable motor , so when the time comes i will be rebuilding it ,, hasn't been touched as yet and hope it lasts a fair while !!
