I just bought a 3/89 HJ61 with the 12HT (thats what I was after) in it, with 5 speed manual. 12 volt electrics. Its a Sahara with all the fruit, I only bought it for the engine and gear box but it is in such immaculate condition with only 189000km I have grown very fond of it and plan on keeping it for years to come. My only slight problem with it is, with it warm and say 1500rpm, when returning to idle of approxx 650rpm, engine will for a split second drop to about 300rpm then recover, dash lights will flash with low rpm for the split second as it thinks it is going to stall.
I have the cars complete service history from day one and problem goes back to early ninetys , car had always been serviced by toyota dealer in Melbourne and there fix was raise low idle to 900rpm, This is not right and I have put it back to 650rpm. I have adjusted the dle compensator at the rear of the govenor with limited sucess. I'm a diesel mechanic and have all the specs and ajustment procedures coming from Perth, Just thought I'd ask as someone may have had a similar fault and know the fix.
Also looking for a roof rack (Sahara high roof) and electric radio antenna if anyone knows of them around.

Cheers

Hi Steve,
Can't help you all I can say is you are not alone with this problem, I have a 3/90 Sahara 60 series with the 12HT and it has done the same thing a couple of times. There was a post on here last year about a 12HT powered cruiser that was so bad it would stall, can't remember if it was fixed or not.
Regards,
Joe.

Thanks Joe, The service history says this car has stalled on occassions, but it hasn't done that yet to me, I will get to the bottom of it eventually.
cheers steve

I have one exactly the same but with 24V system and it does the same thing. Haven't figured out how to rectify it yet. Some one mentioned that there was recall for this on newer cruisers but haven't been come across anyone who's had it done to ask. I would be interested if you ever figure it out.

As for roof racks I stay away from them once the gutter seal is cracked there's no going back, mate with older 60 had used roof rack emptied 3 tubes of silastic into the gutter trying fix it. The added problem with the hi roof is the load is on longer supports thereby putting exerting torque on the uprights clamped to the gutter.

........FIXED!, Maybe I should wait a month before making that statement. I am quietly confident that I got it as it has not played up since my adjustments. The 12HT and particularly the later 12HT has an idle damper in the rear cover of the govenor, can be identified by a large nut and cover, 22mm spanner. Ensure idle is 650rpm with aircon off. remove cover, loosen lock nut , will see shaft sticking out with circlip attached, wind damper out, rpm will drop, flick throttle a few times, idle fault should get worse, slowly wind damper in until fault goes away, lock locknut, now adjust low idle back up to 650rpm, 10mm spanner. turn aircon on check rpm, should be 920rpm, adjust accordingly, adjust NEXT TO low idle adjustment. Engine must be hot when adjusting, outcome will be different between warm and hot. In the end adjustemts are fine and it took about 6 goes to get it spot on. Problem gone.
If anyone is going to have a go at it, drop a line and I'll see if I can help if needed. Thanks for the reply, always interested in a chat, particularly about Landcruisers.
Not sure were to post reply so I have doubled up

Hi Steve

I had a 12ht motor I purchased and put into a 2h ute. I had the same stall problems up until the day I sold it. I thought it was just something with how I had fit the engine. What it you fit some sort of hydrolic slow down onto the return spring of the accelerator cable. I do remember two rubber tubes around the twin springs on the accelerator return - maybe make them longer or just newer.

The other is I had the recall for stalling on my new V8 ute - although it never had any stall issues - the dealership said they felt it was more to sort out the pre-combustion knock which is quite noisy until it warms up.

Steve,
I have had my HJ61 for over 200,000K and the rpm problem has never happened to me. My vehicle 10/88 is not a Sahara model so it may have something to do with Sahara add ons.
