There is plenty of info in mapping 'Help' lists but no matter where I look it is difficult to disseminate all the info. So I need to pick a luminary's brains :-) (Greg, Thew Explorer..where are you?)

Here is what I have done so far:

I have Placemarked a proposed route on Google Earth
I have written all the Waypoints down in a Word File

Now I want to transpose all of these Waypoints to Oziexplorer.

Does a shortcut exist to do this?....... From Google to Ozi

Or do I have to mark each Waypoint in Ozi....

There are about 70 of them.

Hi Willem.

I haven't done it myself but there is an option in OziExplorer to import waypoints from a text file and I know you can create a .txt file from a word document in MS Word.

The one problem you may have is the .txt format probably requires the data in specific colims separated by commas.

If you look in OziExplorer/Data directory there should be a Demo1.txt file you could use for reference.
It may be just a matter of converting your word file to a txt file, then aligning the txt data with the sample.

Willem - Is this what you seek?

Importing Waypoints from a Text File
see also Exporting Waypoints to a Text File

To Import waypoints simply select the Import Waypoints from Text File on the Load menu.

The datum used for importing (the datum used for the positions in the file) can be specified, if the datum is in the file in one of OziExplorers standard datums then it will default to this.

Before manually creating your own text files for importing you should create some waypoints in OziExplorer and Export these to a file in the desired format and use this file as a template.

File Format

The format is the same as the Waypoint text files from Waypoint+ but with some extensions.

However these files are not meant for import by Waypoint+ there are extra options on the Garmin menu for importing and exporting Waypoint+ files. The reason Waypoint+ cannot use these files is the datum names are different, when Waypoint+ finds a datum name it does not recognize it gives an error.

RECORD TYPES

Waypoint+ types

The 1st field is signifies that it is a Waypoint record, the characters Waypoint or WP can be used.

Each keyword is followed by a designator that describes what kind of storage is used with latitude and longitude. DM and DMS are stored in as single packed floating point number.

D=decimal degrees; ddd.dddddddd (34.064531922)

DM=degrees minutes; ddd.mmmmmmm = ddd mm.mmmmmmm (34.06548 = 34 6.548')

DMS=degrees minutes seconds; ddd.mmsssssss = ddd mm ss.sssss (34.06453 = 34 6' 4.53")

UTM=zone,easting,northing

Extended Types

To make it easier for text data entry extra extended types have been added.

DMX=degrees minutes; the degrees and minutes are entered into their own fields separated by commas.

DMSX=degrees minutes seconds; the degrees, minutes are entered into their own field separated by commas.

BNG=zone,easting,northing (British National Grid)

IG=zone,easting,northing (Irish Grid)

NZG=easting,northing (New Zealand Grid)

SG=easting,northing (Swedish Grid)

SUI=easting, northing (Swiss grid)

WP, waypoint name, latitude, longitude, date , time , waypoint description.

Example:

Standard Waypoint+ types

WP, waypoint name, latitude, longitude, date , time , waypoint description.

The date must be in month/day/year format or left out and the current date will be used.

Examples:

WP,D,WPNAME,34.064531922,-117.2959507350,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description

WP,DM,WPNAME,34.06548,-117.80632,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description

WP,DMS,WPNAME,34.06453,-117.29595,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description

WP,UTM,WPNAME,56J,445946,7063980,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description

Extended Types (preferred for manual data entry)

WP, waypoint name, latitude(multiple fields), longitude(multiple fields), date , time , waypoint description.

Examples:

WP,DMX,WPNAME,34,6.548,-117,80.632,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description,Symbol

WP,DMSX,WPNAME,34,6,4.53,-117,29,5.95,11/23/1995,19:29:00,Description,Symbol

No fields are case sensitive, lowercase or mixed case can be used in any field.

The symbol is coded as A=0 B=1 C=2 etc

The Garmin GPS waypoint display format is also added to the end of the line after the symbol, however it is not guaranteed that this will be continued in future. N = Name S = Symbol C = Comment

Datum

The datum can be specified in the file.

The Datum Record Type

DATUM,WGS 84

The datum is optional, if it is not there you will be requested for the datum.

The datum must be a recognized OziExplorer datum name, these can be viewed on the datum list.

When importing the file the software will allow you to modify the datum.

Willem,

Having got your placemarks on Google Earth (GE), in the left hand side panel, ensure they are selected (box'es ticked) and right click on them. "Save place as" will bring up a dialogue box - select the .kml file option (not .kmz) and save to a your drive. Ozi (the recent versions) will load this file (File|Load from file|import Google Earth (.kml) File.)

You can also make a track in GE by dragging your mouse along the intended route. This will generate a file which can be saved as .kml and fed into Ozi.

Hope that helps

So far it looks like the easier option.

I have done what you said. Saved a Placemark to Data in Oziexplorer on my C drive. BUt when I Load Waypoints from File in Ozi Data it is not there??

Also how do I drag a track route?

Willem,

The facility to load .kml files into Ozi was added to Ozi a while back. It is possible you are running an earlier version which does not have this included. I have version 3.95.4q which does have it. To find it in Ozi, click File, then Load from File, which will give you a list including (at the bottom in my case) "Import Google Earth (kml) file". Simply click on that and tell Ozi what file and where it is.

If you don't have this option, check your version number (in Help|about) and if it's older than 3.95.4q it would be well worth downloading and installing the latest version. (No cost for registered users.)

I haven't used this recently, so a bit rusty, but I'll check it out and set up a few tracks, then get back to you.

Cheers

Willem, just noticed you're trying to load "Waypoints from File". No - you must use the "Load Google Earth (.kml) File" option. Having got them into Ozi, you can then save them as waypoints in the usual Ozi way.

Willem,

Sounds like you have an older version. It may well be that it's quicker to download and instal the latest (it's now up to 3.95.4s so I'm out of date too!) rather than "do things the hard way". As Chris mentions below, you'd also gain the ability to look at Ozi tracks in GE which can be pretty useful.

Willem, I have the same problem, I can only save or copy one at a time. There must be a way to copy and save multiple points from GE to a .kml file....? The other problem I have... John & Val said to "drag the mouse across the map to form a track" .... all that does is move the GE image, not produce a track.... John & Val help?

Have you resolved the problem yet? We worked out how to do it at Willies place about 12 months ago but I can't rember the sequence off the top of my head. Happy to have a fiddle and get back if you still need a solution.

Willem, Fred

Hey guys, I'm no expert, just been there and fallen into most (I hope there aren't too many more!) of the traps.

Willem first.

The trick is to get all your placepoints into a single folder, then save the folder as a .kml file.

From the GE help facility :
"You can create folders and move other folders, placemarks, or shapes to them. To create a folder:

1. Right-click on a folder in the Places panel.
2. Select Add > Folder from the pop-up menu. The folder you right-clicked on is automatically set as the container for the new folder.

Once the New Folder dialog box appears, you can set the following fields:

* Name
* Description - Enter a description for the folder. For example, you might enter text that gives a general description of all the placemarks in the folder. The first few words of the description appear below the folder in the Places panel. When you double-click the folder, the description appears in a balloon in the 3D viewer." .................blah blah blah...

In practice, go to your first placepoint, RIGHT click, ADD|FOLDER to create a folder with the name of that placemark. Then drag and drop the other placemarks into that folder. (This becomes the default place too, where any new placemarks are stored.) When you've got them all in there, Right click the FOLDER and save it as a .kml file. Ozi will pick up this file and display ALL the waypoints!!

Fred - I apologise for my vague description. As said, I'm no expert and you tend to forget the little traps you fell into a few months ago.

To make a track (a path as GE calls it), rather than a waypoint/placepoint, click on the icon in the top row - 3 little diamonds with tracks between. A box will appear where you can give the track a name (and do a lot of other stuff if you want to). The trap - Do NOT click OK until you are finished with your track, as that will terminate your track record and you'll revert to dragging the map around using your mouse. The cursor will change to a square with index marks on each side. Click and hold the mouse button down at the start of your track and hold it down while you trace the track. (You can also just use a series of clicks along the track if you prefer, but GE puts in lots more placepoints than you would have the patience to do, so gives a better track.)

During all this, the mouse is busy following the track, so if you need to move the image, use the keyboard up,down,right,left buttons.

Only when you've finished your track do you now hit the OK button in that first screen that came up after you asked to make a track. The track will then be saved and will appear in the left hand sidebar. From there, select it, RIGHT click and save to your machine as a .kml file that Ozi can use.

Hope that makes sense. I know just how frustrating GE can be. It's an incredibly powerful tool, with huge power to confuse and frustrate!! (There's more stuff hidden behind the right mouse button than I've found anywhere else too.)

Good luck to you both

Cheers

John

Also as a matter of interest you can easily view, tracks, waypoints etc. that you have in Oziexplorer in google earth. To do this, open your tracks, waypoints in Oziexplorer, then click on File - Save to File - Export to Google Earth. In the dialog box that opens click on the third button from top left (view data in google earth), google earth will open automatically zoom in and display your tracks and waypoints.

Willem,
If you want to amalgamate a few sets of waypoints, then under the "LOAD" icon you will find "Append waypoints from file". Keep doing this so all your waypoints are showing on the map and then save them to a single file.

If you want them to be visible on a particular map, then load the map; then under the file tab, click "check calibration of map", then click on "Options" and you can attach as many waypoint or track files to the map. I find this really useful for cross-country travel if you are following someone else's tracks. So whenever you load the map, the tracks and waypoints appear.
