howdy all,
sidesteps as my ute is copping a flogging from rocks and mud and dead roo blood the list goes on....and on what brands and types are the best like one brand that gets used from the $$$WD shops they have diff types like ones that go onto the body and ones that go onto the chasiss id rather more groundclearance so im tempted by on the body but now they have plastic bits they any good ?

Shane that's what they are supposed to do, cop a flogging. Personally I'd go to an engineers and have them made out of 2" steel pipe toped by 3.5mm checkerplate, bolted to the underneath and supported at the front by protection bar-work connected to the bull bar. A good engineer would probably do the job cheaper than your average ARB set.
Cheers Mick
P.S. A bit of detergent and water should work on the roo blood.

Shane, I think you will find that MickO has already answered your question.
That is, instead of buying from the usual retailers, you might find it cheaper to have side steps made by an engineer.

Side Steps are an expendable item, and regardless of how shiny they may start, they will soon enough be far from it.
Look for steps that are U-bolted directly to the chassis rails and which offer some form of protection directly under the sills themselves, (this is a downside to my steps, they are plenty strong enough, but if I come down onto a
rock, directly onto the sills they are partially exposed).
Ideally, integrate scrub rails into
the steps, which connect to your bullbar.
like this...
(not that I needed an excuse for a couple of pics ;-)
There are many brands, but, again, nothing will stay shiny, and talking to a local engineering mob may see you being able to customise your options (particularly if the ute is a trayback).
cheers
Dave

I bent the crap out of my sidesteps on the last big trip so replaced them with C-channel. Cost about $28 all up. The brackets were still in place...I just had to straighten them out...lol
So get some brackets made and get some C-channel and you should be able to get the job done for under $100!

Made out of steel, you can massage them back, and easily touch them up with black paint.
