Tyre Sidewall Bulges?

Hi
I was looking at my mates 6 month old Wrangler tyres today.

We noticed that all 5 tyres had 3 or 4 bulges or bumps around each sidewall.
We then inspected my brand new Bridgestone 694 LT, a couple of these tyres had 1 or 2 of the same bumps/bulge.

I always thought sidewall tyres where smooth without any bumps unless a potential fault.

How do you find your tyres when you run your palm around the sidewalls?
Any comments would be appreciated.

Regards
Norm

Hi Normglenda
I have noticed the same thing on my Cooper ST/C tyres. I first noticed the bulges after they had only done about 7,000km. They have now done 40,000km over the roughest country this country has to offer and they have not changed. I just keep an eye on it and don't really worry.

The minor bumps are normal. The big ones are not and can represent a broken cord or delamination.
Get them inspected by a Goodyear dealer. If they are abnormal, theres a very good chance they will replace free of charge, unless your mate has been obviously trashing them.

I run 2 sets, they both have these 'characteristic' lumps in them. when they were new they didnt but as they age they develop these, my KL78 Kumhos have done 15k and the Procomp muddies 54k of some hard work and they have not gotten any worse. so dont stress unless they get bigger then as Phil stated get them checked.

The crap hancooks had them. Had a set of Goodyears wranglers years ago and they where shockers, and could not balance them. Only plus was I could not wear them out.

Normglenda,

I have cooper ST's and have the same thing. Minor bumps on side wall from new. I had some concern but have done 25,000 now and 6,000 of that on corrugated dirt roads and have not changed.

Might be normal?

Marco
