Just need some idea what drivers of this car are getting when loaded up without towing and loaded up and towing?
I would appreciate honest figures, since leaving
Melbourne (and really cheap fuel) my figures are as follows
Average speed 100kph and not towing Petrol 18 litres, gas 22 litres per 100.
Towing at consistant 90 KPH Petrol 23/24 litres per 100 and Gas 27/ 30 litres per 100
Have had car serviced with new filters, new plugs tyre pressures at 38psi, roof rack with camping gear and a 17 foot Jayco pop top, now I know Diesels are better but this consumption seems very excessive and expensive at 99 cents per litre for gas(sometimes $1.16!!!)
Does this mean trade in time for a T/D???

Carl I agree, I've an 02 3Ltr T/D and pull a 17 Ft Freedom and I average 14 Lts per 100 K's towing and nearly 10 ltr per 100K;s not,
I know the petrols use more but that does seem excessive , have you took into account hills, wind against you etc ?
regards,
Dave

Hi Dave
thanks for that, Every Diesel owner I come across tells me similar figures, what I really need is dual fuel figures, For most of this trip the wind direction has been favourable, using 4th gear and cruise, "D" is useless and I do appreciate the fact there is a fair bit of weight, Used to own a 3 litre Gu and was getting 18 towing and 13.5 not towing, only bought the dual fuel because of cheap Melb prices, Dual fuel certainly serves no purpose up here in the Territory!!!

G'day Carl
I'm with Dave on this one. I drive a 4L petrol, and on the highway (without a roof rack) I get just on 13L/100klm. This is at a pretty constant 100kph - rarely any faster.
If you're getting 18L/100klm under the same conditions, you'd better start with your friendly neighbourhood Toyota dealer...

Tried that George, everything has been serviced or replaced, their last response was injector cleaning, I use injector cleaner all the time, at a real loss here

Ok - the next step could be to have a look at
this site.
There's sure to be someone who's had a similar issue with a dual-fuel Prado 120 series - about the fifth topic from the top.

...I'd better try "whose" rather than "who's" - you get lazy when you use a spell-checker:-)

Carl I take it is an auto? How many Ks has it done? It does seem excessive, most 4l are quite good on fuel. Also
check with Prado piont web site lots of info their. We own Jacks which are generally more thirsty then 120, but even our auto is better then that.
Check your air filter, get your maf cleaned, try a 10/40 oil in the cooler weather, and try running premium(takes a few tanks for computor to readjust) The premium fuel will clean injectors etc leading to and increase in efficently.
Cheers Pete

Thanks Pete
already been on Pradopoint, the oil may not suit the top end, but I will have a look at the Carbon cannister and MAF, Toyota dealers just don't want to know!

I am very interested in the above as I too run a 4ltr prado.
OK, for the mechanically uninitiated (me), what's a MAF?

Hi Fred
Have a look
here.
I think the Prados use a "hot wire" MAF, but don't quote me on that.
MAF's are critical to fuel efficiency, are relatively easy to get at and clean with contact-cleaner, but are VERY delicate.

Thanks for that, Wiki (in this case) provides a very clear explanation.

mass air flow sensor= m a f . I believe the prados use a wire also,
Carl what about the oxygen sensor in the exhaust? Normally last about 150000ks.
Could be worth while checking out 2.25 in exhaust as
well, have head they make a diff.
Good luck Pete

Had fun getting to the MAF sensor, some clown at Toyota had over tightened the 2 nuts on the engine cover and 1 nut would not come off, just spinning around, anyway cleaned the MAF was a bit dirty, all put back again, double dosage of injector cleaner, tyres at 38psi and off to
Darwin, will see if there is any improvement
thanks for everyone's help
