Hi,

I'm an old member with a new name as I could not log in for some reason.

We have a Jayco Flamingo. I love it!

But, there is 5 of us ( 2A + 3 K) and we seem to have so much "stuff"!

I normally pack 1 bath towel each, 1 beach towel. Thats 10 towels!
Thongs & sneakers, coats, blankets blah blah
Balls, bats, frisbies.
Scooters, bikes
5 toilet bags
etc etc. There is a lot of stuff when you have kids!

I like to keep the inside of the trailer neat once set up! There is not enough room for me to be stepping over stuff on the floor and I don't like storing stuff on the beds during the day as I like to read, kids have a rest or have a nanna nap :) I want the beds to be for beds!
Normally I store everything under the seats and in the cupboards, but everything becomes a mess and it's a rumage through for everything.

Even the outside of the camper looks a mess! Balls, bikes and all the fun stuff left everywhere around the camper.

Everyone has 1 bag and thats all they are allowed to take, but there is still storage/organisational issues.

So, tell me how you store/organise all your stuff!!! Any photos?

And, does anyone know if wecan we get a bike rack fitted to the Flamingo?

Help!!!!

We use microfibre towels, available pretty cheap at say Kathmandu, or similar places. If you wait for the sales you would get them pretty cheap, about $20 on sale. They dry really quick as well, which is a bonus and 5 towels would not need a 5 meter clothes line !!

Hi we [2 adults /2 teenage girls ] have had 2 jayco campers ,and have relied on wire storage baskets 1 each per person plus a few extras for additional stuff. These basket have been used in 2 different methods.
On our 1st earlier 1990's model i screw mounted a set of draw runner/tracks to the ceiling of the camper running down both sides into which the baskets sat when set up. When packed up these baskets travel on top of the sets/table ,this method proving very successful.
On our current 1999 finch we still use the baskets but as the roof is of foam filled construction i did not mount the tracks to the roof ,but instead have madeup a set of 2 boxes which fit inside each other which travel on the floor at the rear, when set up these sit on the bench above the fridge which we then place the baskets inside these also on runners.again the baskets travel on the seats [great for overnighters etc].
If we stay long term [ie a week or more] and the girls need to carry more clothes thongs and shower gel !I will then revert to plan b which involves setting up the southern cross tent next to the van and using this as the walk in wardrobe- change room-storage shed and place the baskets etc in the tent.Although this requires a little bit of extra set up it removes all the clutter from in and around the camper. An oztent would work great for this purpose IMO.

hope thishelps

Gday Jazz. We use a little two man tent that gets set up under the rear bed. All the little odds and ends go in it when we are camped for a few days. If we are doing a overnighter we simply take less.

Thanks guys.
Maybe if I sell my Black Wolf Turbo Twin I can use the money for a small Oz Tent.

I thought I might buy a plastic tub with lid for all the balls/frisbies etc and then that can just sit under the camper van outside. And maybe another box for all the shoes that can be left outside near the door.
I might buy a special bag for all the coats/beanies/extra blankets that can be left in the back of the car and used only if needed.
We have only used the camper about 4 times so still trying to work out what works.

We have non slip stuff in our cupboards. Do you guys leave all your cupboard items loose in the cupboards ( eg, plates, cups, bowls) or do you stack them into baskets that fit in the cupboard?

Does anyone have a checklist for each cupboard? I'm thinking of labelling inside each cupboard door.

Thanks for all the tips!

no idea where you are or are going but it's usually recommended not to leave shoes outside at night as the wildlife can like to nick off with them. We use a plastic basin to store them in at night that gets brought in last thing before lights-out, but if you have a box that has a lid leaving that underneath the camper at night would probably be fine. At beach sites the basin also doubles as a foot wash outside to minimise the sand that gets walked in. The only thing we have on the floor when traveling is a popup dirty clothes hamper. It goes under the table and doesn't move around. If you are going to put boxes or anything on the floor make sure they don't slide around and damage your cupboards, etc.

Our crockery (melamine stuff) & pots just sits in the cupboard on the non-slip matting. We put some foodstuffs (jams, vegemite, butter, etc) in a plastic tub that goes in a cupboard. breakfast cereals are in plastic containers in another tub. We usually have 3-4 varieties (no one eats the same thing!) and each container has about 3 serves in it. We keep the original pkts in a cupboard and top up the containers every few days. Works well as we pull the cereal container out, serve, then put it away. Then pull out the 'toast' tub and use that.

As much as we like to keep the lounge area clear, we usually end up with a pile of towels and blankets in one corner.

We separated a lot of under seat areas to make them more useful. Have a look at our camper mods for how we keep everything in it's place! Thought I had a picture of our pantry cupboard with it's plastic tubs but it's not on that page. If I find it I'll add it.

Another handy thing we made was some shock cord 'clothes lines' that we string under the bed ends or around the bed end flys if we've got them errected. Cut to the correct length they are easy to set up and provide enough line space to hang towels and swimming attire. We also have some for inside that go from bed end to bed end and allow us to hang a few towels or 'smalls' up inside.

As far as the bikes go... we figure they an go without them for a week or so! We're too worried about them getting run over by grey nomads anyway! ;)

Cheers, Nige

we have a swan and are a family of 5 (actually 6 of us for a week last xmas) it took us sometime before we were happy with how we pack everything and still sit there in the van thinking if it could be better or easier each time we go away.

I have all toys, games, even tennis rackets (if needed) 2 golf putters etc in the space under the seat next to fridge. we place all beach and bath towels, linen etc under the front seat; annexe tarps etc in the side hatch at front and this is also accessible under front seat next to door so when the annexe etc is out we use this for anything we want as its locked but still accessible from outside if we need toget in. cabinet inside door next to table has all plates etc. we also pack in food etc to fill in the gaps and space until we get there and repack into a camp cupboard which sits on a fold out shelf i made that sits above sink and cooktop benches. i also put a microwave on it when needed for use in a caravan park, toaster, kettle, coffee + cups etc on this shelf too. we have 4 drawers for cutlery, odds and ends, and canned food in bottom drawaer. under sink is wash up gear, kettle and toaster when travelling and another drawer i made in top section of cupboard for glad wrap, alfoil, paper towel, plastic ziplock bags etc. the other drawer has coffee cups packed in for travelling. under i seat at table i keep all odds and sods, electrical leads, lights etc. we keep jackets under other seat plus some other stuff which escapes me for now. we also use an annexe so we take 2 or 3 sets of 4 plastic drawers for clothes and these lay down on the lowered table and seat until we arrive and go outside in annexe when set up. we take as many drawers as needed depending on length of stay and number of people. i also have a wardrobe that folds down and it has our clothes in that too. i fitted a false floor in base of robe for security storage like wallets, camera, handbags etc. you can fit frypan, saucepans etc in an oven if you have one. we have another cupboard below robe for shoes etc, but really only have one pair each plus thongs. i fitted a rear bumperbar and fitted a bike rack on that and have carried up to 3 bikes. now i usually only take 1 bike and lay it down inside on an old sheet on the front lounge. you can fit a rack on the A frame too. go to some of the caravan forums and look at the caravan mods/modifications sections for ideas. we also pack seats and a camp table and a george foreman grille/hotplate under the lowered table. we have some of those foam mats that link together which sit upright against cabinets for protection when packing/driving. the seat cushions stack on floor between oven and table, with boogy boards etc etc. i have fitted 4 lengths of 50mm PVC pipe under van to house the drinking hose and sullage hose. they just go in from 1 end/side and wrap around to other side. keeps the mess and smell out of the van or front boot. i also have a 150mm and a 100mm PVC pipe on front A frame for annexe poles and tarp poles. I put a large tarp up over the whole van and annexe so we stay dry, and much cooler too. You will get organised after a few trips away. dont be shy to ask others you see on your travels for a look at their setups, most people are happy enoughto show off there ideas/inventions. there are plenty of info and ideas at all the caravan and camper forums too. cheers...

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to post such great idea's photo's guys! There is some great tips here.

I guess if we had an annexe it would be handy as we could store all the clothes in drawers or boxes, but we don't have an annexe and I don't think I would like to keep all our clothes stored outside otherwise.

I think I will buy some of those microfiber towels for showering and then just have the beach towels in a plastic storage tub that I will keep outside under the camper when not in use. I guess most of the time they hang on the line anyway when you go away!

Thanks again,

Keep the ideas coming!

HI there , i also have the Flamingo (outback) - and in the same boat as you -- except 1 more :)

4 kids 3 boys ages 5 7 9 and one girl also 5 ( mixed family )

trying to keep things neat - NOt a chance - when we go to the beach ( stockton) everything that can be outside going under the van ie boogie boards and toys - bikes and stuff ---

during the day - we pretty much throw all the Bags of Clothes in the bed ends ( each person has 1 bag for all there clothes ) and most of the other stuff goes into the 4x4 - as we don't do to much 4x4 when we have the kids - the car is primarily for the fridge and storage - when we are kid free -- all the stuff is in one end of the bed ends .....

we have a bike rack fitted to the back of our one -- its connected to the spare wheel carrier - if you need a photo i can shoot one off to you ..... but be carefull - if your going to have larger bikes , they can block your number plate - and i was pulled over by an evil kenevil one day ( police officer on a bike) and told to take them off and put them on my roof as my plate was not clearly visable from 3 lanes across when driving almost next to me ??????

anyway - if you need more info - let me know and i will shoot my email address to you and take it off the forum ...
