Have found information in archives about this area but could anyone give me some updated info on whether there is camping on the southside of the river near Sandon itself when you come up from Minnie waters ?
Can you
camp anywhere along
the beach or only at Illaroo ?
The camping that is available on the northside of Sandon Rvr, is this only in the caravan park and can you have a
camp fire there ?
Thanks
Pezza

No camping at Sandon, only Minnie (Ilaroo). It's quite nice there though - big campgrounds with some sites having direct access to
the beach.
I'm not too sure about the north side.

PEZZA
you can
camp on the northern side of the river, this is controlled by national parks.
yes you can have open fires there when the fire restrictions allow it.
it has
toilets there,no hot showers though and is very popular in holiday periods.
to get there you turn off the highway at Maclean (ferry park) and follow the signs to
Brooms Head.just b4 the
Brooms Head village you turn to the right and follow the gravel road for about 20 odd kilometres till you reach Sandon River, cheers.

Mark!
You forgot to say we lock the gates to the
Brooms Head rd regularly especially Friday afternoon of a long weekend and the first couple of days of school holidays. Please dont forget to remind people of this as it is of great importance if we are to get a site.

Just in case you are interested . There is a very nice
Camp Ground at Station Creek on the southern end of Yuraygir Nat Park with access to
the beach and
Pebbly Beach Camp Ground . Its a nice place. The turnoff is approx 20 kms North of Corindi Beach along a good gravel road for approx 20 kms.
Camp Ground fees apply but there are
toilets and fresh water swimming Takes about 4.5 hrs driving from
Brisbane on a good run

Thanks Trevor, was gonna
check out the top half first but will likely reconsider now knowing the ridiculous fees.

NSW parks what a rip off. $7 per car entry, $10 per person camping fee, worse than some caravan parks where you get flush
toilets and hot showers and games rooms.

Hi

The massive increase in nps fees is partly so they are competitively neutral to cps.
Blame the cp associations, mind you I doubt if nps put up much of a fight.
But it is a sign of things to come if the cp associations have their way in having all low cost /
free camping sites charge similar fees to them so those areas ARE NOT COMPETIVE.
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS TO FREE or LOW COST
CAMP!!!

Yes,we stayed at lake Arragan (Yuragi NP) about 2 years ago and the fees were to double the week after we left. This would make it cheaper to stay at the caravan park at
Brooms Head.It sucks !

Youch !! Over 70 bucks for 2 adults and 2 kids for 2 nights !! Who of you down there are game enough to admit to have voted for these crooks ? I knew NSW government were a bunch of thieves but thats daylight robbery !
I checked
Pebbly beach as it has no showers and 4wd access only thinking it would be cheaper, 4 bucks a person more !!! Start calling NSW the "Lingerie state", the less you get the more you pay !
Just another reason to stay out of that place and remain in QLD I suppose, it's a shame, I would've liked to have gone there, it's a beautiful area.
Will head north to Woodgate, just under 4 bucks/person/night and no "vehicle fees" sounds better to me.
Thanks again to those that helped.
Cheers

Hi Pezza
Have camped at North Sandon many times, holiday periods are packed. Great fishing in the Sandon River and have caught some large fish from the rocks off the island out from the
camping area, just make sure you walk back before the tide starts to rise as it's hard going as the sea runs across the sand into the river.
Prepare yourself for the sandflies at dusk and dawn. Also some good fishing in the upper reaches of the Sandon River.
About 3-4kms before
Brooms Head there are some good camping spots at
Red Rock both behind the beach and next to
the lagoon. Only
toilets and fresh water. Not so many people seem to go there and NPWS provide fire wood.
If fishing take a walk north up the beach about 3kms to the first headland and have a go. I have always caught some very good snapper off the
beach fishing into the rocks about 50 metres off the beach. The walk is certainly worth it and generally no people. Nice place for a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers and some quiet times with the bride.
Hope you have a good time, we always do.
