Hi All

I have been tempted by the deals that are presently being offered by vehicle dealers to replace our aging Cruiser with a new one.
The V8 Turbo diesel Troopie while having all the requirements of power and space to suit our needs is a relatively new design motor wise. What I am looking for is some opinions from those of you that already own one. Reliability and any drawbacks from having a fully electroniclly controlled fuel injection system, also the rear wheel track being several centimeters narrower than the front are a couple of concerns that come to mind. Any feedback both positive or negative welcomed.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Cheers Pop

Hi, I've got one it's only done 20000 k's. Like you I would like to know about the long term reliabilty of the fuel injection system. The difference in the axles is not a few it is 10 centimetres, however it is not a prolbem. Overall I am very positive about it. The low down torque of the motor is incredible. It will creep up a 35 degree slope on a idle, and get 11 litres/100k's on the highway. I'm not very computer literate, but I hope this helps. Trevor.

Not all that computer literate myself, in my case it's because of old age;-)) Thanks for your info, that's incredible mileage for a large and not very aerodynamic bus. What speeds do you generally sit on when on the highway? Do you tow anything?

Boobook2

Now that is interesting news.

The inclusion of airbags in the 09/10 model may just be enough to convince my co-driver / supervisor / live in accountant .... to go for it.

Can you or anyone else please point me in the right direction for more information.

Cheers

About time Toyota did this. They would be losing a lot of $$$ to nissan as they have airbags and ABS in the cab chassis.(mining companys big users of tray backs, troopys) OH&s would play a major part of this as far as I'm aware airbags and ABS are to be on all company vehicles now.. Our vehicles are also required to have cruise control......... WHG

Keep hearing this rumor also.
Would love to see some definitive info on this but none seems forthcoming??

Wherehegone, Losing sales to Nissan in the mines???
Seems many thousands of 78/79 series vehicles have been sold to date in the current configuration to the mines and this supposed issue of being airbag required does not seem to hinder them being purchased.

Hi John, might not be the case in all mines but my cousin is over WA (has been past 4 years) and he was telling me last xmas that they are now purchasing patrols due to the cruisers not having the airbag and was an OH&s reason.. He doesnt care either way, he has one as company car so he said as long as he's not paying for it he couldnt care what he drives lol.........WHG

I can't find anything solid on the interent, but there is lots of rumour. I read it in an article in the Melb Herald Sun Cars guide on Friday 27th Feb. It was a small article on the bottom RHS. Shoulda kept it. It said late 2009 /early 2010.

Does amyone still have the paper?

The upgrade of the Troopie series is not a rumour it is fact. Product release date is presently set for either November or December 2009. We're booked to help with the release and the information is public knowledge amongst every fleet manager in Australia.

The full details of the technical side of things is being pretty closely held but at the moment you can expect the following changes:
-chassis rails same front to rear
- ABS
- dual airbags
-new rather flash dash, comapred to the current one
- with the new dash comes improved airconditioning

That's all I know at the moment.

New Prado also scheduled for late November as well by the way

Regards

See 4x4 Australia, April 2009 ( current) Page 13. Article titled Bagged 70's!

"Expected to the marketplace in the last quarter of 2009, or at the latest, the first quarter of 2010.

Airbags and new dash according to that article.

I believe the only minesites not buying the current bagless 70 Series are BHP sites. Everywhere else there's heaps of them.

I really hope Toyota cinsider the recreation market in this release at the end of the year and bring out an extra cab or dual cab, auto box.

Droolong now, sorry. Have to clean up my keyboard...

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
