Hi all,
Heading to Dunn's track over the weekend, will be camping the one night.
Rather than pack the stove, stand and gas bottle for the sake of a couple of meals and billy boil ups was thinking of purchasing one of them little Primus single burner stoves that use the butane canisters.
Not having ever used one before are they up to the job or simply a toy ?
Cheers.....Lionel.

Work OK for what they are. Just be careful not to cover the whole top of the unit so the gas canister overheats. It can forcefully dismantle the stove.

Lionel
Having been in the same situation before. I think you would be better off with a small gas portable bar b
cue that you can
cook , boil and even toast in the morning . You can buy them in their own bag and they do now take up much space

They work very
well, the only common problem is they can be a little slow on a cold morning.

So slow that, in temperatures below 0°C, they can cease to function. An old hikers' trick is to warm the canister under your clothing, warm up some water with the small amount of gas available before the butane freezes again and use that heated water to keep the butane canister warm whilst boiling up your stew.

if we are above the snow line here, we just put the cylinder in our sleeping bag, nice warm cylinder in the morning!

Be careful what you stand it on, They will put a burn mark on a wooden table so I found out.
Cheers Dave...

Take a look at Coleman fold and go stove. Small, compact, and takes small coleman propane cylinder, so totally portable.
At least this way, you are getting far more efficient burning, cooking etc.
Food for thought....

Lonel,
They work
well as long as the weather is warm. I find they perform poorly on cool mornings, say under 10, and are near useless under 5.
For the $20 they cost, a single burner screw on top for your existing bottles is a better option IMHO.
Cheers,
Jim.

Jim, They are good, but hopeless in the wind, at least with the other type the plastic box on edge doubles as a wind guard, & he is only talking about 1 night.

Living in the cold country, can verify the non-performance of butane canisters during cold weather, however you can get 80% butane 20% propane canisters (the same brew as in the Coleman canisters) for the little Primus stoves - they work really well in cold weather and although costing about 20 cents more than straight butane they put out more heat and don't freeze up in the cold - the local outdoors
shop in Armidale carry "elemental" High performance Butane 80%/Propane 20% canisters for about $8 per 4 pack, (elemental website - www.gmagencies.com.au) and I understand that GasMate also put out a 80/20 canister. All the el-cheapo packs are 100% butane. Hope this helps

Lionel-take it from someone who uses them in the same climate as you do - you will never pack a gas bottle again
best $20 you will ever spend work best with cast iron frypan which retains heat
