Great Central Road

Part of the "Outback Way", the Great Central Road is the main thoroughfare through Central Australia and links WA to NT. It is widely used by buses, trucks, 4WD and occasionally 2WD vehicles.

Hi all at ExplorOz
Will be travelling on the Great Central Road leaving Laverton on 1st April would like to know if anyone has been on the road lately to advise me of anything i should know about.

Painter, you can check this site
http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport/
and it's WA equivalent; it's usually fairly accurate.

Great site like you say,have the same site here for West oz,
very accurate like you said, cant wait to get into the dust/mud/ water, just travelled Lake King /Norseman road no dust but water like you never have seen 1/2 km at 500mm deep in two places

You're meant to get a permit to travel the road - on both sides. Last time I checked, WA permit is sent out online straight away, while the NT one comes via post.

The road's pretty easy, you could do it in a sports car

A lot of it maybe but I suspect not all of it. It would be interesting to see how a low slung sports car handles the rougher country around Warburton and the sand on the Docker River section.

Did the trip 18 months ago road was good bar 150km near Warburton. Now after comments i dont know if i will take the Audi or the Mercedes

Hi Paintar, we are doing the Great Central, Laverton to Ayres Rock and on to Winton around 1st July.............hope you have a good trip, and would be interested to know your thoughts on the trip after you have finished it, hope you put a report on the forum.
