Hi All, heading off to Kangaroo Island for the first time. Will spend the first week of September over there camping. I have checked back through the archives and found Will’s post back in Feb 2003 with Jim, Toonfish and Melissa’s replies –all great stuff.

Any other suggestions regarding "favourite"camping spots and perhaps land based fishing spots. We are self sufficient and enjoy bush camping, but if any of the caravan parks let you light a fire then we would consider it :-)

Cheers
Alex

Alex, contact SA Tourism www.southaustralia.com and or phone 1300 655 276 and ask for their KI brochures and the secrets book. Haven't been there for quite a while but the SW corner had the Flinders Chase National Park which is really lovely. We also were able to hire one of the old lighthouse houses overnite. Then they were very basic but cheap. The western end certainly is more isolated and scenic. For fishing, go to any piece of coastline, and give it a go. There are fishing charters that operate from American River and probably Kingscote.

Lets us know of your experiences on KI as a recent report indicated that everything was very expensive on the island. Two years ago the ferry return fare was close on $300 for 1 vehicle and 2 humans.

Hi Willie, Sealink have a deal on at the moment -if you stay on the island for 2 nights or more the cost of a vehicle larger than 5m is $168 return and $68 for an adult and one travels free. i.e....$236 return for the Troopy and 2 adults. Not sure what the normal cost is...I'll post something on the forum when we get back with costs etc.
Cheers
Alex

I remember going through Antechamber Bay a few years ago and thinking what a great camping spot it was. It's at the east end of KI on the way to Cape Willoughby. The fishing is supposed to be good as well. The only downside was the rough, corrugated road.
