I don't know a real lot about it or what I can receive but I have just installed a new Sony car stereo and am heading up to the Kimberly. I was more interested in the mp3 playing capabilities but I noticed it has a couple of SW radio bands. What can I receive? I was having a bit of a scan and I could hear some sort of asian language channels just now.

asian fishing boats transmit on this ' short wave'. once in international water there is no restriction on transmission power so the voice you hear could be anywhere in the world. i think abc radio still transmit on sw. and so does bbc news from uk. handy if you get lonely and want some 'real time' voice.

looking at that bbc link the freq changes at different times. What's the reason for this?

because certain times of the day radio waves wont travel the distance , and usually it only the news and or weather they transmit so its only half hour or hour segment any way. get a hf radio, good and interesting hobby , you listen to all sorts of stuff around the world .......

Check ABC's radio australia website for their times and frequencies, easily heard in remote WA during the day last year. I was at Neale Junction for a bit last October and was able to follow to the world financial meltdown on ABC news! Terrific fun

If you are into sport, on Saturdays they broadcast the southern grandstand program which has AFL and on Sunday the northern states program which covers the rugby league.

Cheers

You'll find Radio Australia's Asian broadcasts the best for inland Australia as they're beamed overhead; the Pacific broadcasts tend to miss the mark. RA transmit a lot of stuff found on ABC's normal programming. The news is more international, but it still keeps you in touch with Aust news when nothing else is available. Schedules avail on the RA website.
Also, ABC run regional programmes on SW from Alice, Tenant Ck and Katherine. Not super high power, but still good, esp if you're in the NT. Check their website.
As with all these SW stations, they change down in frequency at night, up in frequency during the day, so you'll need to follow the schedules.
My Patrol radio has SW, and it's useful, but not as good as my HF radio. Suspect that your Sony will be similar. If you have an HF transceiver which is programmable on Receive, then that will pull in the stations a lot better.

The ABC regionals in Katherine, Tennant Creek and the Alice send their broadcasts out on SW (aka HF) as a service to locals in that region - we often listen to that on our long distance HF (aka SW :-o) radio while mobile or camped (if we can't get the ABC on the car radio). My experience has been that SW bands on various radios need a very strong incoming signal, and often are only of any use at night (when SW comms improve markedly due to ..... hey .... that's another story :-o).

thanks everyone. I will print out the freq. of services before I leave. I go bush to get away from all the mod cons etc but sometimes it's still nice to hear the news and what's been going on.
