Hi Robin , its Sam the account manager, Our server robot has detected a pending crash on your computer network , but don't worry, an engineer is on the way out to fix the problem"

Robin-> Does he know the way ?
Sam -> He is new but we got him a Tom-Tom !

30 minutes later Phone rings ->
Hi Its Sam again, our engineer will be a little late but he is nearly there !

20 minutes later Phone rings- >
Hi , is that Robin ? its Fred your IT engineer I'm at the address but can't see your company, where are you ? I'm near K-mart!

Robin -> There is No k-mart within 5 kms of us, where are you ?
(Fred talking louder) I don't know , but Tom-Tom says I am there in South Dandenong, theirs cars everywhere and I can't park.

Robin-> Fred, talk softer, the phone can't handle shouting, drive straight ahead until you can park and call again.

Phone rings -> Its Fred , I'm parked ok, but now I'm completely lost.

Robin -> Whats the street name you are at, get out the street directory.
Fred-> No directory, they said a Tom-Tom is all I need and I can't see a street name?

Robin-> can you read out your co-ordinates , I have the maps of the area up on my PC and can guide you.
Fred -> (shouting again) Whats a co-ordinate ?
Robin -> Calm down , I will give you an approximate address that should be in the Tom-Tom , enter- Greens rd Dandenong South into it.
Fred -> It won't go, it needs a street number !
Robin -> enter number 1
Fred -> theres no number 1
Robin-> enter number 2
Fred -> Theres no number 2
Robin-> Enter number 3
Fred -> Got it, its says you are 15km away , starting off now ! , will call when I get there.
.
.
.
.
20 minutes later Phone rings ->Its fred , I'm here.
.
.
Robin -> Ok fred , do you see a Havey Norman store ?
Fred -> Yep , right next to it.
Robin -> Drive east , and its 300m down the next street to your right.
Fred -> Which way is east ?
Robin -> Can you see the sun ?
Fred -> Yep
Robin -> Drive down Greens road and the sun should be in front of you and a little bit towards the left.
Robin -> Oh We re-booted the server and Sam says its ok now - so take your time !
.
.
Phone rings -> I'm here in your car park !
Robin -> Don't move, I'll come out and get you.
Fred -> Thanks, I hope you have some strong hot coffee brewing!

( Royal comission later determines that Fred had entered South Dandenong into his Tom - Tom instead of Dandenong South )

A good one Robin.
I found it hilarious
That’s the sad future, user friendly smart machines and dumb people.
(no disrespect to Fred)
It’s a worry.

So what did we do before Mobile Phones?

Oh that's right - we used initiative and worked it out for ourselves rather than just call someone and expect them to solve our problem.

Anyone driving in unfamiliar territory should be properly prepared!

I was actually having trouble containing myself Muddy, the idea of using the sun to navigate the last bit was like switching on a light above the Tom-Tom users head.

When last in NZ we travelled with friends they in their CV & us in ours. They had hired a GPS & I had my wife to tell me where to go.

Heading into Dunedin they screamed ahead of us and where soon well and truly out of sight. We just let them go. We arrived at the van park well and truly expecting them to be set up and onto their 3rd drink. They turned up about 10 min after us. Their GPS had sent them on a merry dance whereas we had just used a paper map.

Technology doesn't always work in your favour.

It did turn out funny didn't it - I just bashed it out without really reading it , like we do with many quick posts , but after I read your reply I re-read it and laughed myself.

ROTFL, now that is a good Friday Funny and a true one. LOL.

The difference is that in pre- mobile/ gps times we had to use OUR brains to get us where we wanted to go so by the time we got to the age that Fred must be it was second nature to find our way.

Good one Robin, thanks for sharing.

Cheers
