I have used my XL on a trip around Oz and only had to replace the AAAs once. As far as I can figure the four AAA = six volt. There is an input plug on the unit mains lead. You would have to cut the power input by half. Probably with a six volt charger. AAAs are the cheapest way to go, in my mind.

Hi carlj,
When my unit is installed in it's cradle in the car in runs the whole time off the cig lighter cable. The only time the batteries come into there own is when you use it as a hand held or if the car is not on accessories etc.

I found a "cigarette lighter" plug with a USB on the back of it.
Runs the Xplorist all the time on 12V.
If we're on the blacktop and don't need the GPS, we can then run the iPod off it too!!

I have the same GPS as you. You can just plug in the cig plug on the USB cable to your cig lighter socket and it will overide the batteries.

I run
mine on the cig lighter socket almost all the time, only use the AAA bat when away from a vehicle, I found the AAA's don't last for very long at all.

For more info Search Magellan eXplorist XL
you will find links to manuals and instructions that you can down load. That will give much more information than the basic instructions that come in the box.
I use it often, too work out area ground speed etc for cultivation,
check speed, navigation in towns and those bigger
places that I try to avoid!.
With the appropriate software even names the creeks you cross out there. Unfortunately it doesn't keep pace with road changes ie new Motorways etc, it will in time I guess!.
I have the cards for Aus, and NZ almost cost as much as the hardware,
well worth it.
