Its a bit rich including Tasmania as part of Australia. That really ruined my percentage. All but 18 visited.

We score 96, one of the missing being Nain which even Google Maps does not recognise. (Its apparently the "Hutt River Province" nonsense, which we have at least driven past.)

Nobody mentioned two other islands - Nguiu Settlement is on Bathurst Island and Kingscote on Kangaroo Island. We have not been to Bathurst Island. The other two are Marysville and Valhalla in Vic.

Its interesting to see three places on Eyre Peninsula in SA - Port Lincoln, Streaky Bay and Coffin Bay. They are delightful secrets in an area of the country that is never crowded.

We are happy we went and saw as much as we could when we could, as we are tied to a couple of days drive from major hospitals these days. Would happily go back and see the lot again, but its great fun filling in the gaps nearer to home with our caravan when we can anyway.

Go there while you can! And to the spots that the list does not mention - Honeymoon Bay and Marble Bar and Punsand bay and all the others that did not get a mention!

Max

I got to 17 courtesy of the grey funnel line in 1984. Strange place. Some of our sailors got bleep and stole a horse.

Nguiu in the Tiwi Islands in 2000. On the same trip I got to Daly River which out ranks most places on the list, Ngukur, and Borroloola. All by light plane.

I've been to the Huskisson RSL several times - can't remember much about the rest of the town.

WE have missed 12, for reasons already stated (trk can't swim), but including William Crk in the 100 best towns in Oz.?

Don't get me wrong we enjoyed William Crk, (drank round after round with the entire bar - 3 others), but in the best 100, - don't think so!

I am still in awe of Adelaide River making the top 100!!

Having spent 5 days trapped there having a new cv joint fitted (I always break down on Fridays when shops are closing and nothing is open on weekends ...) my wife and I nearly died of boredom. You can only spend so much time in the pub ... and the war cemetary .. and waving at the Ghan ... before it feels like Ground Hog Day.

Luckily for me I had a bad dose of flu and slept through one day ... that left four more.

But the mechanic was a genius and a good bloke to boot.

Rember the nursery rhythm [If you go down to the woods today your in for a big surprise]

When in Yamba it`s a little different [ Don`t drive down to the southern end of Pippie beach, you will get a big surprise]

The locals will all tell you that. It`s a no go zone.

You've gotta wonder at the criteria they used to select these towns. I did notice in the blurb that a lot of "stiff drinks" were had by the judging panel. Too many methinks...

No point in doing post mortems but Parachilna??? Mataranka??? You have to wonder if the judges have ever been to those places. I was at Mataranka (the town and the "resort") just two days ago and...well....let's just say it wouldn't bother me if I never went there again.

To be fair to Parachilna it was a 40 degree day last November when we were there and that may have coloured our judgement a bit.

Broome. I've been to Broome so many times, trying to figure out if I like it or not. I still can't make up my mind but I'll be there in another week or so, so I'll have another go at deciding.

Katherine was a curious choice too. I'm there at the moment and I have to say I am warming to the place.

You have to love these "lists". If nothing else they bring back memories, both good and bad, and they're always a good conversation starter.

Cheers.

On a list of 100 of the most stupid things to do no1 would be
"make a list of 100 best towns '' ,, ranks right up there with the
'signs " Tidy town competition winner 2004 "ect and as you drive thru in 2006 the place resembles a garbage dump ,,LOL.

Well, Im the orphan, could only count 27.

IMHO the list is a dud. Why? There is not one place from Gippsland, Vic, on the list. That is absurd.

Also no metion that I could see of the Hawkesbury River region, but I'm not all that familiar with the towns in that area so I could be wrong.

Interesting read none the less.

Cheers,

Jim.
