Hi Glyn,

All solar cells are photovoltaic, it is their basic means of operation.

Perhaps you are asking for the difference between monochrystaline and polychrystaline type photovoltaic cells?

If I was actually going to write a long post answering your question when I remembered there is a darn fine article on this very site that should answer all your questions, See Solar Article

There's also some excellent information here: Collyn Rivers

Stated simplistically "Photovoltaics" is the word used to 'describe' the method of processing of electricity from the sun, by Solar panels of all types in general.

The three main types of Solar cells are:

* Mono-crystalline Solar cells
* Multi-crystalline Solar cells
* Amorphous Solar cells

Poly-crystalline is the term used to describe 'some' Multi-crystalline solar cells sold in Europe.
To my knowledge only one company makes ALL three Solar cells.

I would recomend a "Poly-crystalline" branded panel.
