Dear @ll,

I just received the permit for visiting the Calvert Range for our travel group today. :-)

I did not find a map of the Calvert Range so far (only a very rough one showing a track leading around) and would therefore like to ask if anybody can send me a mud map.

I would also like to know what the track is like which is leading in there. How long would it usually take you to go there from the CSR? We will travel there by end of may this year.

My email address is farmer112@arcor.de .

Thanks a lot for your valuable help,

Cheers from bloody boring Dortmund/Germany,

Juergen

Juergen,

A very good book, that is available from the site, Explore Australia by 4WD has got a lot of information about the Canning and all the side trips. It does have a map of the Calvert Range track.

The track out to Calvert Range can be done in a few hours but be warned this track has the toughest dune that you will have to cross.

Once you arrive there is is a circuit road around the range and you can go in either direction. I have a favorite camp site but there are a few others about.

We spend a full day driving the circuit road stopping and exploring the many rock out crops and gullies looking for Aboriginal rock art.

I believe there is only one campsite now. The rather dusty one at the entrance to the first gorge depicted in your pic above but not the one nearer the waterhole

Funny, I do not recall that big dune but heard on the radio waves of someone having trouble getting up it and then giving up in the end. We came in to the Calvert Ranges from the East in 2006 and then on to the CSR for a short distance.

Willem,

The first photo is from last years camp site. The second photo is on of the waterholes that we walk up looking for rock art.

Just around from the first camp site is another area that has been used as a camp, not as rocky.

The dunes after Sunday Well can be a challenge because of the height and soft sand. When we went in last year there had not been too many vehiclesthat had driven over the dunes and because of this the dunes were still fresh.

Juergen,

We did the CSR last year and when you travel from South to North, you see the almighty ranges to your left. They are a sight to behold. You then come to a turn off to the right with a big sign stating the holders of the land etc and their rights. If you cruise down here till you get to the ring road and travel around you can't really get lost. There has been that much traffic through there that the roads are quite basic to follow. We did get lost on the way out though but it was 10pm and we had a few under our belt.

We camped at Durba and made a day trip of it leaving fairly early but we really did take our time.

I will see if I still have the maps for it and I will scan and send through.

The track in is easy enough. There is one dune (just after Sunday Well) that is a little harder (harder than any of the dunes on the CSR...which are all oretty straightforward). I went up slowly and hat to shuffle down to first to creep up and over.
There were two camp areas when I went in July 2008.
After travelling the Kimberlies and the red centre I found the rock art to be disappointing in the 3 locations that I visited.
When I do the CSR again I will not bother with the detour next time.
