Hi everyone, I've got a question.
Live axle 80 / 100 series Toyota's have quite small front diffs, but the front control arms are big and bulky, they hang down even lower than the diffs.
GQ / GU Nissan's have got small front control arms, but their front diffs are big and bulky.
What's known to go better in the ruts on the front of them, what's a better design?
What's known to go better in ruts on the rear axle / diffs, are they the same size or different?

The control arms are next to the tyres, so usually go up and down in the bumps together. The diffs are further away from the wheels, so are more likely to hit.

Get bigger wheels. That raises the whole lot higher. Coupla millimetres here or there is not going to make much diffrenece to the equation

A guy on outerlimits makes custom front arms to graft the gu front diff in an 80/105....using nissan front part and toyota rear....best of all worlds, as they r made of Bissalloy (spelling)
This is the strongest option

kingkennans,
Both types of front ends are good, it all gets back to wheel placement and how good the driver is.
The only difference between the 80/ 100 Series and the GQ/ GU is the position of the rear diff.
On the Toyota the front diff and rear diff are in line, clear the front diff and the back diff will also clear.
On the Nissan the back diff is in the centre of the vehicle and the front diff is off set towards the drivers side. This has the effect of making the diffs on the Nissan twice as wide at the Toyota.
If you are driving in a rut the Toyota diffs will be in or close to the drivers side rut but in the Nissan the front diff will be in or close to the drivers rut and the rear diff will be on the high center of the rut.
This is something that needs to be taken into account when driving in ruts or over big rocks. Most Nissan drivers know of this and drive accordingly.
