Have sold my prado (at long last) and we have made our minds up 100% we are getting an 80 series T/D multivalve in auto. Have my eyes on two of them. First one has 157k on it, white in colour 95 model with history up to 100k nothing after that and they bought it from auction ?? Why wouldn't where it was traded originally sell it if its that good or did they see somthing this bloke hasnt ?? Looks pretty genuine (going by pics only). Has $23 on it and its through a dealer but I swear he doesnt want to sell it, has not returned any of my calls so I can ask more questions about it ?? WTF !!! Thought the yards wanted to sell their stock. The second one is the same (model etc) but has 270k on it has full service history, oil changed every 5k with receipts to prove never seen off road except for some gravel, few more stone chips on bonnet BUT is dark blue in colour (mmm but wife says will show all the scratches where as the prado didnt being white). Problem is both vehicles are interstate so am only going by pics on both of them. Will be a case of either fly up for one or down for the other. I am going to give this bloke till tomorrow to ring me back. Neither of the vehicles are modified in any dramatic way except the one with higher klms has window tint and a bullbar but neither have lifts etc which to me is maybe a good thing as they havnt been rock hopping etc. Would you give the bloke with lower klms another ring AGAIN 5th time or would you say stuff him and go with the private seller ?? .......WHG

Wherehegone,

For the sake of $1500 Id go with the lower Kms one. there really is no substitute for lower Kms - even though diesel engines may do huge Kms (if well serviced) without a problem its also the wear and tear on every other component in the vehicle to condsider as well. Also with the dealer one you will get some sort of a warranty.
I would not worry about it being traded and then auctioned. Some new vehicle companies only specialise in certain types of trade ins to re-sell and will on sell through auction any vehicle that does not suit their criteria.
My only other comment is have you considered a Sahara in the same model. They are pretty rare for some reason in that model (1995 to 1998), They still bring a premium price up to $30,000+ for a good one.
Cheers,
GPM

Hi GPM, yeah mate I would love a Sahara (factory diff locks etc) but their harder to get then the GXL. I have only come across 2, one was petrol (out of the question) the other was the earlier model prior to the multivalve and not interested in the earlier ones. Apparantly the multivalve had a few changes in driveline as well as the engine. Im very tempted just to jump on a plane on thursday and go and check out the low k one in QLD, worst case I suppose will be out of pocket bout $160 if its no good and have to catch a plane back home............WHG

G/day WHG, 270K is a bit of a worry for that money IMHO.

Especially with it being auto, although they are a tough all round thing unless you know the owner, his mates, aunts, and uncles, i would be a bit hesitant., if you get my drift.

Cheers Axle.

Hi Axle. I have got a firm price off him of $20,500 that is for the higher k one. I rang the Qld one again this morning I actually spoke to the same salesman he said will ring me back in 10 minutes that was 3 hours ago so he can jam it, not getting a cent from me. The higher k one is the second owner, he has had it for 5 years no expense spared just put 4 new tyres on it two weeks ago serviced every 5k with receipts to prove it, it is the limited edition model has the alloys, abs,few other things (unfortunately no factory diff locks LOL) He is sending me a heap more pics today. At the end of the day if I get down there and its not what he says it is Ill give him a gobful, keep my money in my pocket and catch a plane back home. The multivalve and even the earlier ones seem to still be between say 18k upwards towrds 30k, red book says $13, load of crap redbook is........ WHG
