Hi all,
We're looking at buying a new van to do
places like
Plenty Highway,
Gibb River Road,
Chambers Pillar and so on, no hard-core 4WD (or so I am led to believe) but plenty of corrugations etc. We were looking at Kedron and Sunland but it has been suggested that a Golf Outback would do the job just as
well. We can get a late model 18' 2nd hand one significantly cheaper than either of the others so were wondering has anyone had any experience with a Golf Outback on these type of tracks? Is it worth considering or should we stick to our original choices?
Thanks
David

Hi David
I don't know anything about the Golf, but we certainly never saw one on any of the dirt roads our trip last year which included the
Gibb River Road, Tanami Road,
Mereenie Loop and to
Chambers Pillar. Very few other brands other than Bushtrackers on the GRR. Not many take a caravan in to
Chambers Pillar. There were two
Kimberley Caravans there when we were there - but they are different again, and not cheap! I have a friend with a Phoenix, and they also took their van to
Chambers Pillar - but it is not an easy track to tow on.
Using the name "outback' for a model does not in any way indicate its suitability for outback tracks. Also bear in mind that recovery costs in remote areas can go over ten thousand dollars. A few kilometres on a corrugated dirt road may do no perceivable harm, but hundreds of kilometres of relentless corrugations can ruin a van.

Hi Mildew - The GRR was the BEST dirt road we went on last year!

We did approx 4000km of dirt road last year in our Jayco Destiny Outback and the only damage we had to the caravan was the shower door fell off and the waste water outlet was broken by flying rocks. We did the Strezlecki,
Oodnadatta, Great Central and the Tanami. We did 3 tyres and a rear leaf spring on the Gu ute which I think was caused by overloading the ute. We just drove to the conditions.
We also did some lead/acid deep cycle batteries which I was told by the local battery bloke was caused by the corrugations.
