Hi everyone, i have just purchased the Raster 250K cd rom map set and think it is fantastic, would be better if i had a 3 foot moitor or a A2 printer but it is still great. but i was wondering if you can get the same thing in a 100000 to 1 scale ???also it does worry me the idea of taking a lap top scrub and relying on it as your map and it goes bang!!! any idea's??????

Electronic devices are always susceptible to going bang. Not much you can do apart from taking a spare everything or backup paper maps. Motor vehicles are also susceptible to going bang but does that stop you.Hooroo

Fair point mad dog, but i am sure that you must leave yourself in the best possition possible and i wouldn't like to end up 300k scrub without a map!also i feel happy that my old 60 seris is not run by a computor as some of my mates have computor controlled tractors and they are very unreliable in the dust, heat and rain vs the older versions that can often do 5000 hrs with basic sevices, and some of the new models are now moving away from complex electronics.

1:100 000 maps - have you done a calculation of the numer of maps in Aust at this scale ? 6 times as many 1:250 000 maps !! (although there is not a complete coverage at 1:100 000)
Everything is likely to go bang, as mentioned (Car, GPS, laptop, camera, frig etc)

I try and keep my camera in a pillow case to stop dust, maybe putting the Laptop in a bag would help.

I always carry a few paper maps, especially ones of the more remote areas - just in case.Subaru Forester
size isn't everything !

Dingo,
yep, take paper maps too. One precaution I take is to copy the CDs into the hard drive, but also take a backup CD with you. That way, at least if your CD drive fails you've got the maps backed up anyway, or if you lose a lot of data, you can reinstall from CD.Bob
