Hi,
I was wondering if any history gurus could put a date on this photo. It is supposed to be one of the very earliest recorded motor vehicle accidents in USA. All I know is it is early 1900s.
Also if anyone has a photo of a vehicle accident that predates this one, please email me a copy to my members message.
Thanks,
GPM

Judging by the body styling of those cars I'd say that picture is at earliest circa 1910 - 1914, otherwise you'd expect to see a buggy style car in the shot. One of the cars parked in the distance looks to be more 1916 - 1920, the one where the guy is at the back of it straddling his pushie. However, I could be wrong.

"Is This The First Recorded Auto Accident"....NO
the first Automobile accident was a 1771 version 2 Cugnot 3-Wheeler Steam vehicle.

Version 1 was a 1769 model
The vehicle, which weighed about 2.5 and was reported to have been very unstable due to poor weight distribution - which would have been a serious disadvantage seeing that it was intended that the fardier should be able to traverse rough terrain and climb steep hills. In 1771, the second vehicle is said to have gone out of control and knocked down part of the Arsenal wall, (the first known 'automobile' accident.

Doug,
I am referring to photographically recorded accidents. I know there are earlier ones that happened. But can anyone (1) date the one Ive posted and (2) provide a photo of an earlier recorded accident.
Cheers

the picture would be post 1910 as the car in the far right of picture is, as far as I can tell, an early Mercer and they were produced from 1910-1925.
The most famous version being the "Raceabout", capable to be "safely and consistently" driven at over 70 mph (110 km/h) it was capable of over 90 mph (140 km/h) top speed.
Cheers, Colin
