Hi all ,I just got back from a short trip Penrith to Armidale and back
and as we were driving I asked a mate who was also driving with a car load of people sleeping how do we work out Ltrs per 100 kms,
well didn't I open up a can of worms and at the end I just said forget it I will ask my mates on E/O and this is what I'm doing now,
I have this info but I'm not sure how to use it and no I don't normally drive my 4B to dead empty I was just curios.
I drove 920 km to empty both tanks
I put in 132.46 ltrs of diesel
I paid the nice man behind the counter $157.50
I think that if I was to say 132.46 Div by 9.2 = 14.39 per 100 KMs
would that be correct?
I'm asking this because we are going on a larger trip and I have been told the average trip around
the block with no side trips is about 25000kms so I thought that's about $167.00 per 1000kms
25000 x 167.00= $4175.00 ??
I know I must have stuffed something up because it sounds too CHEAP!! LOL!
Regards
John.

Hi
John,
"I think that if I was to say 132.46 Div by 9.2 = 14.39 per 100 KMs"
That's the way I work it out so either we are both wrong or both right!
"I thought that's about $167.00 per 1000kms"
If it helps my Trooopy has an average of $166.87 per 1,000 kms for its total distance travelled of 89,817 kms.

Hi
John,
The k's are a bit of a mixed bag as the Troopy is my daily driver too.
I only own the one car so it does everything.

The calculations are correct 14.4 lites per 100km. But in many parts iof IOz you will be paying a lot more than $1.18 per litre - some
places probably twice that. Also is that consumption just for a vehicle - if you start towing anything consumption will shoot up.
Cheers

Hi Saharaman,
Yes I did think of that and it was whilst I was playing with figures that I saw your post so I will be off up the coast next tuesday and will get an Idea of consumption with the van on the back and loaded....Im going to be depressed at the end of this
test I just know it LOL!

There's nothing wrong with your maths. You paid $1.18.9 per litre. You would have to expect to pay above that for most of your trip. I reckon about $1.35 - $1.40 would be more like your average price. So that will push the total up a bit. Are you planning on carrying all your gear inside the vehicle? On a trip like that most people are either towing or carrying something on the roof. That's when the fuel consumption starts to go up. I travelled from
Broken Hill to
Tibooburra once with 2 spare tyres (no rims) on the roof - they were like a sea anchor!!! Almost doubled my consumption. I promptly found room inside for them and things got back to normal. Also can I say that your 25,000 is probably real bare bones stuff. I did 30,000 without setting foot in Victoria and only doing about 300k's in Queensland.
Newcastle -
Broken Hill -
Tibooburra -
Innamincka -
Port Augusta -
Darwin-
Broome-
Albany -
Port Augusta -
Broken Hill -
Newcastle ( and
all places in between)

Hi Teege,
Yep I agree and when I said trip I mean leave Syd head over to
port augusta via brokenhill accross to
perth up the westcoast to
Darwin then down the centre to alice and accross to Syd over 9 months ,so I was being a bit vauge about the Kms and yes a mate also said to say about $1.50 as an average and I have not decided to take the 3.75 mtr tinnie around or leave it at
home?

I did a big trip last year and trhe dearest ULP was $2.20 litre...at 3 ways,
Tennant Creek. Diesel was $2.56
I averaged $1.54 per litre over 17,000km
But....fuel is a little cheaper now across the board, but I would still look at averaging $1.50 per litre and that is what I am doing as I go away next month...again :-)

You don't have to drive till its dead empty.
500 K's will give a good idication, using your numbers, it would've needed 71.95 liters to do this distance.
I went from
Brisbane to Kalgoorlie via
Simpson Desert, return thru
Melbourne and Vic. Highcountry, in my 1HZ powered 100 series and averaged 15l/100K.
That was with a roofrack and my gross weight being around 250-300 Kg over.
Worst economy I got was from
Birdsville to Mount dare, 18.35l /100ks, best was from Uluru to Kalgoorlie 12.8/100k, mainly because there is a lot of dirt road driving so I slowed down to 85-90 most of the time,
Shane

Agree with everything said here. In the year 2000 I paid $1.20/L in
Kununurra. I'd hate to think what it is now. Once leaving the east coast it seems you're very quickly into much more expensive fuel.
If it makes you feel any better organised bus tours seem to be about $200/day. So maybe you can get a lot more days for the $4000.
