Hi
I have had a 'strange vibration' just start on the disco. It only occurs on accelleration and decelleration with the clutch engaged. Fairly constant in frequency around the 20-40km/h stage of accelleration. Depressing the clutch makes it stop and above the 40kmh mark it disappears altogether. From my internet research it indicates 'internal CV joints' . I am not completley sold on this as it came on suddenly rather than gradually getting worse as you would expect from a CV wearing.
Tyres are BFG A/T's about 90% gone. with landrovers reccomended t/p of 46psi rear and 24 front.
I have had a good wriggle of the uni's and driveshafts and cannot find anything obvious. I have noticed a small amount of clutch shudder sometime ago that seems to have gotton less recently.
Also, there was a mechanic who ran a business in T'ville called 'just landrovers' From research he was a guru on these beasties. However, his number is no longer connected. Any ideas??
I know one of us has the answer.............it's out there....

Hi Craig
You are probably best advised to ask the guys at aulro.com who would have seen your problems before.
The problem could be a few things just off the top of my head :
Engine mounts, front propshaft 'double cardan' joint begins to chew out causing vibrations, or you could be on the right path with the clutch. Particulaly if the dual mass flywheel is starting to feel its age.
Your tyre pressures are wrong for a Disco 2. You are running them too high at the back and too low at the front. The actual pressures as recommended is 28 front, 38 rear. On my own I tend to run about 30-32 front and 38-40 rear. Definitely add some air to the front! Cheers

We had a vibration similar to yours on our Rangie (2000 Vogue) when tyres were swapped around by the workshop that we try not to go to so we had one almost new tyre on the front left and one almost worn out on the front right.
They had put the almost new spare on and then took a day of mucking around to say the universals for the front driveshaft were gone.
I took it
home, put the tyres back as they were and all was fine.
I try not to go to that workshop but they are good for some "Landrover" issues that a normal workshop does not want to even know about and are closer/cheaper than a Landrover dealer.
New tyres since then and never had the problem back but I try to keep the tyres on the same axle at a similar tread depth.

Hi Steve
Are we talking about the same workshop here?
Answer via PM if you wish I am a bit over Ultracharge (ultratune) up here and would never go to Landrover dealers workshop after hearing story after story (all bad) from locals.
Tyres.......Hmmmmm you may have something here The landy has done about 150, 000 ks.

Don't think so as I live on
Bribie Island near Brissy.
Our Landy dealers down here are OK - IF you can afford them. They actuall found a couple of wierd problems when we had our Freelander.
Don't get me started on a Landie dealer in Auckland, NZ that we used to use when we lived there - they were the worst, most useless workshop that I have ever come across.
I am going back to doing most work myself on the Rangie as then I know that it is done properly. Have a look at
http://www.rangerovers.net/index.shtml
There may be a similar site for Disco's and this site does have some Disco stuff. Very good source of info if you look deep enough.

As Said - go to www.aulro.com to get your answer - post in the technical section.
Have you checked the rubber donut on the rear diff - it could be the problem.
Cheers

Or try the Discovery section of
the Pinnacles, which is the next section of AULRO after the Technical section.

Craig,
How many K's has your Disco done?
My first thought is take a VERY close look at the front drive shaft.
The symptoms you describe sound very similar to when my front propshaft 'double cardan' joint started to fail.
Looking at it under the car I couldn't see a problem, but once I got it out - there was 1 uni cup that had cracked - these self destruct pretty quickly once they start to die. These are known to often fail (more likely with a lift or lots of heavy towing - usually around 120,000 - 150,000) and if it lets go when driving at speed - the result is not pretty.
So I would try pulling the shaft out - lock your CDL(If you have the option) and take it for a drive - see if the vibration has gone.
As advised above - have a chat to the guys at AULRO best source of info anywhere on the net for your Discovery.
Good luck with Mark.

Thanks everybody
Yes it was the 'double cardan' joint after all I had a closer look and found some (small) movement in one of the uni joints.
Anyone want to fix it for me? Happy to pay in beer or cash just need it done pronto.
Once again
MANY THANKS GUYS!
Craig

Hi Craig,
We have a Landrover and when ever there is a problem and I hate to say it more often than not of late. We contact British Off Road at
Forrest Glen, they are the best for all landy parts both new and used, and offer great advice when needed.
they have a website www.britishoffroad.com.au

Thanks for all your assistance with this issue. It was the double cardan joint after all.
Chris from Hardie Spicer here in
Townsville fixed it on
the spot this morning. I cannot recommend them highly enough for their prompt service.
Thanks to all EO members and cross overs into AULRO who pointed me in the right direction.
You all saved me many $$$$ and a potentially very expensive repair.
Those of you with landys and toyotas with Dc joints,
check them.........it will save you a lot of grief and 'I told you so' from the missus.
For the purists out there, my Landy has now been bastardised. It has a Toyota DC in it.
Apparently superior to the landrover one.
I am not worried, it works and has lots of warranty from Hardie Spicer.
regards
Craig
