Just got back from Clare last night. Great place to visit. Stayed at a top little place in Mintaro. Lots of rain. Lots of reds. Got 14.7 L/100km on the way home with cruise set to 124 kph until Narrandera. Five on board plus baggage, plus 4 cases of wine. Not bad from the 4.7 V8?Bob

Do you go to Martindale Hall?
We had the pleasure of staying overnite back in May and it was a fantastic experiance. They give you the run of the place as their philosophy is to use it or lose it. Cost was around $190.00 per head including a 4-5 course meal, accomodation and a fully cooked country breakfast. For a Sat. night you need to book 12 months ahead but during the week it is less time required. It may be a different format for mid week.
Would I go again? You betchaAl Symers

Hi Bob,

Seven Hills Monastery just east of Clare is a favourite haunt of ours. The monks there make the best fortified wines in Australia. During May each year Clare hosts the Gourmet Food and Wine festival which is a top occassion with various wineries putting on good food, good wine and live music. Each year we take it in turn who drives home so that one of us can let their hair down(whats left of it).....:-)
Cheers,
Willie

Friends stayed somewhere in Seven Hills at $310 a night. Ours was a lot downmarket but perfect for us with 3 offspring in tow. We visited Pikes, Pauletts, Knappstein and Jeanneret before hitting the O'Leary Walker opening at 2.30. Bit of a blur after that. Has to be best wine region in Oz. Margaret River is great too but pretty expensive in comparison.Bob

Geez Bob you could have invited me to help taste all those good drops....Dont think I would have got out of pikes , hell they make a good drop as do most wineries from the valley.

I up that way in a few weeks to do some fishing but I am spoilt...cos I live only 1.5 hrs away so I dont need to drop into Taylors, Jim Barrys', Skillogalee's, Leasingham or Kirrabilly and all the others that I cant recall.

Hope you like our wines as much as I do some of those from Margret River.

The Clare food and wine Festival is a favourite and if you are considering going book early to avoid disappointment.Wow! am I cute

Richard,
technically I am in the Canberra region and we do have some pretty good local wines. I am on 20 acres in the hills north of Queanbeyan and there are quite a few of my neighbours having a go. One day I will plant a few vines, but for now I will just enjoy the Jeanneret shiraz that I have just opened.Bob

Folks, the winery is at Seven Hill not Hills. Bob I bet you wish you had a diesel when you suck up fuel at that rate on cruise. Shudder to think what it must be like off road or working at all hard!
