Hi All, just wanted to update you on the above thread. I had a Uni-Q chip installed in my 2001 4.5L GU Petrol/LPG recently and I have to say I am most pleased with the extra power/torque it has provided. Overall an extra 15KW with both petrol and LPG delivering pretty much the same. I used my Jayco Outback Eagle over the
Easter weekend and had no trouble at all with loss of power on highway inclines I previously experienced. I even set the cruise control at 95km and only experienced a drop to 92km on the steeper inclines. Prior to the chip, power was dropping significantly to under 80km so yes I am a happy camper. Worth the $1400 and I even get to take the chip with me if I ever sell the Patrol. I have been told the particular chip fitted will fit just about any other vehicle except turbo diesels engines.
Well done to Mark Trounsen and the team at Dynamotive in Bayswater, Vic.

Good result Meerkat ,
mine was done at same place - but then I had to make it work later as they got some fundamentals wrong and cannot reccomend them to do a 4800 manual Patrol (auto's are a lot less critical in there setup - and a 4800 auto owner may have been happy.

That doesn't sound good - did you have to make your own corrections after it was installed???

Hi Meerkat
The Unichip only works on a car in which the static advance is advanced by typically 8 degrees , and it backs off this advance according to max power readings from dyno.
The first thing that has to be done is to verify that a given car can be advanced 8 degrees.
Mine could not as ECU cannot correct that far, and stalled constantly.
I had to figure this out and inform Dyno-motive and once this was understood they could tune it better.
It took them 3 goes which were without charge.
Not being able to fully advance means that the full benefits of Uni-chip cannot be achieved.
Secondary effect is that static advance looses low down torque - not good for 4wd, Autos mask this a bit.
Still use
mine - think it ended up with 12% power increase- it gives street cred to be able to say you have over 200kw and 460nm , but in practise I have a bypass plug so that I can block Unichip out which is most of the time.

Makes me wonder why the manufacturers dont program their factory installed computer bits and pieces to perform as
well as after market stuff. You'd think in these days of desperately wanting to be a top selling vehicle, all of them would be looking for an edge over the competitors.
The better/bigger the numbers they can sprout and better/ bigger performance available as a standard vehicle would have to be a selling point.
So why do they leave it to after-market chip suppliers to give engines the power and torque they are capable of?
I have a friend who owns a T/ diesel VW Jetta. I drove it as standard and after it was chipped. It now uses less fuel and goes like a rocket- ship. He wonders why VW dont make it go like that straight out of the box, all for want of a small piece of electronic wizardry.

As to the question why don't all manufacturers set their cars at the standards achieved by after market chip makers. I would guess it is like the computer chips in a normal desktop computer. When they make those chips they will establish the lowest reliable speed chip and then downgrade all chips to that level so they can have a uniform product. Many people will then overclock their computers by resetting some speed parameters to improve their speed. If you are lucky you have a chip that can go up several speed allocations, if you are unlucky it will cause lots of problems and just crash a lot.
It would be interesting to see if all aftermarket installs achieve the same level of improvement or if it fluctuates meaning it is the same as desktop computer core processors.

I fitted a DPchip while in
Melbourne in Feb.
We tested the truck on the Dyno.
Result's were...........
95 kw @ rear wheel's without and
117kw with the chip connected.on setting of 5
119kw with a setting of 6
On the trip home with the van never changed down from 4th gear,(on the open road) except for one
hill near
Ballina.
Slight inprovement with fuel economy but very noticeable power increase.
Another happy customer.

well mine is not a unichip but i can tell the difference when I go over 3k revs by the amount of the black smoke.
I'm kind of happy with it but at the end of the day, it not something incredible, just to me more fuel so I probably need to change the oil more often. Great difference at the 1500 to 2500 range though, dyno chart showed me that and no black smoke at that range.
Unichip was not available for my model by the way.
I'm thinking of taking it off except for when I actually need extra power and torque (don't tow so offroad high/low range stuff).
No change at all in fuel economy, that figures.

Will monitor fuel economy as it seems to be okay on a long trip but around town, I think I am getting at least 60kms less out of a
tank of LPG but will need to recheck. Also have noticed on starting, engine makes a slight knocking sound and there is a delay as if the engine doesn't want to start. Doesn't do it all the time but probably 1 in 3 and it has been doing it since the chip was installed.

I have a Safari Dtronic in my Cruiser together with a 3'exhaust
Power went from 145 to 165.2 a the
wheels.
Power is noticeably better but fuel consumption is about the same.
Which is good given the HP increase.
Used to blow really black when foot floored on take off. Now hardly blows any and goes like a scared cat off the line.
These chips are not alterable so cant tinker with them .
Manufacurers build a motor for reliability (except Nissan 3.0 of course)
therefore they detune them to get this and the good motors can be altered to give the available power.
Whether or not they will still be as reliable is why you void your warranty by doing this.
