So.... I did my first trip in the Transit Van.... which replaced the SupaTrupa Landcruiser 70series hulking brute.
The Transit weighs in at around 1.8 tonne, whilst the ST weighed 3tonne. Better fuel economy and feels like a car to drive.
So with the help of Navman, my tour along the Murray and in specific: a mad dash between Tempy and
Robinvale, involved a 50k bulldust and corrugated 'shortcut'.
I got to test the bus on some real outback road. WOW! it handled better than any 4wd I've taken down these roads. Mind you, my 4wds have had leaves all round and transmitted every shake and rattle, whilst skitting across the track as they did.
This handles surprisingly
well. Makes me think I might fit it out will some real recovery gear and travel further afield. I have a big NT tour in the offing.
I can now fit a heap of gear in the back along with 'campervan' fittings.
A problem though..... what does the diff sound like in these things? It's pretty noisy!
A whine as you excellerate. I wonder if you can get a LSD for these? 1997 manual 2.5l diesel.....
Cheers Royce
PS.... picked up a beaut soap dispenser for the
laundromat on the way!

with thick (jute) underfelt and some carpet in the back you won't hear any noises back there.

I have heard many a transit go past with a noisy diff...It's a ford thing (falcons are no better.
The injector pumps are prone to kark at around 160,000km and it is about 4k to fix.
Whack a front diff in and a chev.......
Cheers

welcome to the van world. I raved about my Sprinter when I first got it and got no interest on this
forum, but I am very happy with it.Transits have a history of diff problems but can be fixed by most diff repairers. You will find that if you build a storage box come bed over the rear axle the noise will be reduced. Eric.

I am interested to know how the low hanging shock mounts which seem to be about halfway between the
wheels and the diff pumpkin will fair on some tracks? You know wheel placement and diff placement over & around a rock and you get the shock wiped away coz that was then in line.
Cheers - Mobi

The lowest piont is the front cross member. I have had it hit twice in 6 years. These vans do require a bit more skill to drive. Eric
