Had the pajero motor rebuilt 30k and 12 months ago, and it was running in nicely on the shell 15w/40. Did a trip to the NT late last year, and all of a sudden it was using 1 litre/1000k. Scary getting home and wondering if it was going to get worse.

Oil in the turbo pipes after the turbo and rocker cover breather.

Local good mechanic did the rebuild, so back it went and had a thorough check. All looked OK, no blow back, no signs of the new rings or valve guides going, and the only original thing on the engine was the turbo, 320,000k since new.
OK, suspect turbo seals. Had some penrite 20w/60 so tried that, and oil consumption dropped. Notice it was worse on short trips and it was blowing more blue smoke in the first 5k, until the oil warmed up and got to 60 grade.
So new turbo, got one for $600.00 ex Japan.
$1100.00 to rebuild here.
Kept the penrite 20w/60 in it for the rest of the 5000k and less consumption, but still using some, 2 litres over 5000k.

Changed to penrite diesel 15 last oil change, 15w/50, semi synthetic, and it has now done 2000k since last oil change with hardly a change on the dip stick!

Son took it for a run up in the hills too, so most probably gave it a hard run (you can bet he did, keeping up with a 3.2 did pajero :o)), which helped do the last of the running in after 25,000k on the new engine. Have turned the boost back from 17 psi to 15 psi too. 11 psi is stock.

So I am OK now for the next trip. Was getting a bit worried about how much oil I would have to carry for the next trip out west. :o)

See you in St George in September if not before.
