Franklin is located on the west shore of the Huon River, south west from
Hobart and just south of
Huonville. It was named after Sir
John Franklin who originally owned the area before it was broken up into smaller holdings. It is part of the Huon Valley Council area with a
population of a bit over 300.
In earlier times it was a thriving river port with its own shipping connection to
Hobart courtesy of Sir
John Franklin's ketch "Huon Pine". The town went into decline after a road was built to
Hobart and
Huonville became more prominent. In recent years it has become a destination for mainland "sea changers", many of whom have taken up residence in the area. Much of the old town remains.
Biannually the Wooden Boat Centre, a non profit enterprise that teaches wooden boat building skills, hosts a wooden boat festival which draws many tourists to this world class facility.
