Has anyone had a go at installing an awning to their caravan, if so what type, how difficult to do etc.

Any companies worth going through to get it done, heading to Darwin in May.

Seen the new OZ tent type on ebay, any thoughts??

I fitted a Fiamma awning to our Coromal Camper, I had a metal section bent up to fit the curves of the roof to give a vertical surface for the awning ,it ran the length of van approx 3.5 metres, this was then pop-rivetted to the fibreglass roof using a rivet that mushrooms when compressed it gives a much bigger bearing area behind the material, normal rivets are not suitable, it was sealed/adhered with Sikaflex , other types of roof may require a different fixing method, if you are reasonably practical it is not a difficult job , Bill

Hi Brooka27
I bought your standard roll out awning from a caravan parts supplier (a Carefree Simplicity Plus) a few years ago, and fitted it to our old van.
It came with good instructions and only took a couple of hours all up to fit.
Shouldn't be a problem fitting, just need a drill and a few basic tools, and a second person to hold the other end when fitting also helps.
Cheers
Neil

Next van I get is going to have a simple sail track and an awning with poles.

The roll ot thing on my Bushtrack is a pita to erect and put away and the other ones on the market with the side struts are too easy to destroy on narrow tracks.

With my caravan it was not feasible to fit a roll out awning due to the shape of the roof. The caravan did come with a full annex which was very heavy made of thick vinyl for the roof and heavy canvas for the walls. We only used it twice.
I got a good quality poly tarp and had a sail maker stitch in a rope along one side and installed extra eyelets for the poles. The whole thing takes about five minuets to install and is far more stable in windy conditions than a roll out awning. The full cost of this was less than $300.00

I fitted a Carefree roll out awning to our desert series 16ft Pop Top Van. It came complete with instructions and was fairly easy to install/fit. It takes 2 to hold and fit correctly.
We also had to make a special rear fitting for the arm as our van has a Duck tail. We did it at a leisurely pace took our time and completed the whole job in one day including knocking off a slab as payment to my assistant.(the son)
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
