Hi Forumites,
I'm thinking of getting into a second-hand TVan, reckon if Ron and Viv Moon have got one then they can't be too bad. So is there anyone out there with first hand experience with one, I would prefer first hand rather than the next door neighbours best friends uncle type stuff please.
I'll take pros and cons, understand the design for two really nor a large family, plus the possibility of the claustrophobic bit climbing into a "pod".
I read a lot of stuff on the web and seen them in magazines etc etc, just looking for the personal touch. Constructive comments would be appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

This Forum may be useful, although as you are speaking to the converted, it may not be as objective as you may have been looking for.

I'd buy one if I could afford one. Just have to wait for my Lotto numbers to come up.

Hi Jack, Thanks for that, my lotto numbers didn't come up I've just been lucky to find one at the right price locally. I've just done the "Jayco thing" and decided to back to real camping. The Jayco was quite a shock after having a Kimberley Kamper. Plus to have such a large unit hanging around and not using it as much as we would have liked was very frustrating. You live and learn..........
I didn't really want to sign up to the Yahoo site you get swamped with ads and pop ups. Hence the question on this forum. Thanks anyway.

Hi Martyn, we have been very happy with ours, it suits us for the type of holidays we have in our own back yard, ideal for 2 people for reasonable lengths of time. The way these Tvans tow is really quite something, I have driven all sorts over the years and all kinds of trailers, the Tvan does not push you into oversteer on a corrugated corner, previous to owning the Tvan, we had an Aussie Swag, independant suspension once again but completely different to the MC-2 Suspension in the Tvan, the Aussie Swag could be a bit of a handful on a corrugated corner. Anyhow, as far as camper trailers go, a Tvan is very practicle, well designed and engineered, and buying second hand is a good move, ( you wont burn up much $ when it no longer suits you) Have a good look under the thing before buying, units with Hydraulic brakes could be an ex-hire unit. Good luck, Kanga1

Thanks Kanga, underneath looked to be fine, usual red dust etc and electric brakes, the guy I'm talking to knew the first owner, he's the second owner so it's pretty straight. This guy has fitted loads of extras and has the awning, solar etc etc, inside is dust free which is a good sign.

I have a KK and had a good look at ( and in ) one at Rosehill 4x4 show...

Liked nearly everything about it except......( and only comparing it to the KK ) was the lack of storage area around the kitchen ( for pots and pans..tins of food etc... )

But at a weight saving of over 200kgs I suppose it couldn't have a huge gullwing box like the KK..

For 2 people, and aside from the above small criticism, you won't go wrong...

Hi Martyn
We bought a new Tvan a year ago. They seem to hold their value so well that we gave up on a second hand one. With a bit of discount from the dealer and not buying all the annexes and other options we felt we got a good deal.
We are very happy with it. The build quality, suspension, towing is excellent. We like the fact that for a quick overnighter you can just lift the rear hatch and climb into bed. If you put up the tent (not the full awning) it takes about 5 minutes for 1 person. The bed never gets wet and wet canvas is stored in the roof hatch well away from the sleeping area. We have not found sleeping in the Tvan to be claustrophobic at all but a lot of people comment that it looks like a small sleeping area. Never heard that comment from anyone who has actually used one.
The yahoo site is excellent for more info.
We spent a long time checking out Ultimate, Aussie Swag, Kimberley etc etc but after owning our Tvan for a year we are convinced we made the right choice. If you are travelling with a family rather than as a couple space may be important but I don't think the Tvan annex is any more difficult to use than others. To date we have only used the shade-sail awning and have not needed to use the full annex.
Just like tow vehicles there is a lot to be said for personal choice and preference but if you have properly checked out a Tvan and think it suits you then I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Cheers

Dave

DavidT,
Great response, thanks for the constructive comments, just the sort of information I wanted. Do you have the solar option? Water level gauge maybe?

Thanx Fellas. Picking mine up this week for the trip to Cape York. I looked around at others and settle on the Tvan as your all have pointed out. Setting off middle of May. Hope to meet up with a few of you on the road. Cheers.....

Martyn
We essentially have a Canning model although we ordered the lower spec Tanami plus some extras. We have the solar panel. Initially I was not going to order it because for the money I thought I would prefer an 80 watt panel that I could deploy where I wanted. Due to an admin mix up we got the 50 watt panel supplied by Tracktrailer and we are happy with it. It is nicely out of the way and comes with quality regulator. When stopped I have made up an Anderson plug extension lead and hook the car and Tvan together. That way the fridge(which we keep in the cruiser) is running off both the Tvan battery and the second battery in the cruiser and both are receiving charge from the solar panel. We can last up to three days in summer that way without having to drive to recharge the batteries.
Ours came with the single 70L water tank with the electric level gauge and that is a great arrangement. The second water tank does add weight forward of the axel and we felt we did not need it as we also have a 50L water tank in the cruiser. On a trip like the CSR we would also use the jerry can holders for extra fuel and water but have not needed that yet (I dream of the CSR!!!!)

Happy Travels
Dave

Hi David
Good post will second you on all above,as they are a great bit of gear with great build quality. We are sadly parting with ours as we have decided to go farming again & there wont be much time to use it.
Cheers Steve.

Hi Martyn, we purchased a very good 2nd hand Tvan this time last year at what I reckon was good value compared to the price of a new one. Came with full annexe plus some little extra's from previous owner. From late August last year did trip from Vic up thru the Centre to Broome then worked our way down the WA Coast/Pilbra/Kal/Esperance/across the strip down to Pt Lincoln to home. 11 weeks in all & not a problem at all with the Tvan or LC100 series. Towed a treat & had a really good work out from Seal Creeek NP (WA) to Balladonia (thought it wa s short cut!!!). Wherever you go it will follow. You will love it. Quick set up, dry bed etc, the only thing that will slow you setting up is other campers wanting to watch/ask a heap of questions & check out how it all comes together.
Buy & enjoy.......

Caddz
