Ariel or Arial

I have a handheld GME UHF radio (approx 8 years old). Purchased new and never used it much - mainly because you couldn't hear or talk to anyone unless they were next to you!!! Want to install an ariel on the bullbar to connect it up to the handheld and want to know if anyone can recommend a good and reliable one as there is so many to choose from out there.

First and foremost you need to ascertain if an external aerial can be connected to your particular radio. As for improved reception/output a lot also depends on the capacity (wattage) of your radio. Probably the best solution is a magnetic base placed in the centre of the roof of the vehicle. Saves having to route cables through firewall etc. Added benefit is that you can easily move combination to another vehicle. Any reputable aerial/antenna will do. Check this site G.M.E. Australia

G.Day Meerkat. I have a GME UHF Radio purchased from ARB Moorbank NSW. They fitted me up with an antena on my bull bar. Works fantastic. Check them out..

Hi Shaker, think I have been watching too many of my daughter's movies.....Ariel the Mermaid. Aerial or antenna I guess can be used interchangeably

I thought Ariel was a motor cycle.

In my early Army days of radio (in the '60s)- the definition of an aerial was used on a receive only application (such as you car radio)- where as an antenna was on a transceiver (such as a UHF type unit)..

Meercat,

What is the model number of the Handheld UHF??

If it is the TX6000 then there is a mounting kit for it available through most GME Authorised Dealers. With that kit you can then connect it to an external Aerial mounted on the bull bar and also be able to disconnect for portable use when required.

Cheers Kev

H Kev, spot on, yes it is the TX6000. Not good with 'do it yourself jobs' - do I need an auto elec to do this job for me? Don't imagine it would be too difficult or take a long time to do???
Want to also be able to get better range on my mobile phone, so assume I would need a separate aerial mounted also for this??

Meercat,

Contact a GME Authorised Dealer and get them to order you the car mounting kit for the radio. From memory it comes with mounting cradle, power supply cable.
You can then choose which compatible antenna you want and go from there.

HTH
